Overall Rank = 226/609
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 17/39
Pre-race routine:

Change clipless to toe clips, should have used the cages instead.
Up at 4:15 stuff and try to eat stale toast.
Mike picked me up after getting me a cup of coffee, thank you Mike. We had a nice ride until we on Route 5 of 5&20 when we should have been on 20. Not a trip for Mike and I unless we take a wrong turn. Parked up on a side street and rode down to the race.
Reg and chipped up. Go to hit the porta potty. Standing third in line. A race guy tells us there a whole bunch of unused at the other end. Wrong! Now standing in line 30 deep. Oh well nothing to do anyhow. Oh did I mention Mike forgot his goggles and lost his chip once already.
Got wet suit on and found Mike after hitting the head. Lined up with the blues and waited.
Event warmup:

50 feet of stroke and wait at start line.
Swim
  • 11m 46s
  • 800 yards
  • 01m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got a little water in the suit and sleeves. Started front line over half way from buoy line. Water for huge party barge to clear the course. I think they had to get someone.

No warning just he horn and off. Kicked some and hit is hard for the first 100-200yds. Got a lot of breathing room. Took a peek over to right and had a couple blue cap there. 3/4 of the way out I started to pick up wave ahead. Lots of picking and moving around. Was able to hit buoy close not so crowded. Crossed and went under the far one. Headed hom still picking and passing. Had a blue cap come up fast. Young girl so not overly worried but reminded I was in a race. Never have I have to pick so much side and breast stroke. Hit the which are 20 feet from T1. Sweet. Felt good. Second in AG the first place guy took the whole thing in the swim. 20 seconds faster 100. He was smoking.
What would you do differently?:

Warm up more.
Transition 1

Comments:

Mike's bike is gone. Good he had a good swim. Tried to get wetsuit off standing. No go. Sat had to put shoes on any how. Had to entire length of Transition to hit the bike out. Better in sneakers then barefeet. Trying the MM
What would you do differently?:

Just sit my ass down.
Bike
  • 48m 13s
  • 14 miles
  • 17.42 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the first I road in toe clips on the tri bike. Should maybe practice a little. Next time Need to use toe cages with straps. About mile six I could feel the imbalance in stroke. Quads are on fire, can't put any thing into the hills. Would pass on the downhill then get passed on the up hills. Would pick up a few here and there but mainly get passed by my AG non-stop for the first.

Volunteers did a great job manning the intersections.
What would you do differently?:

Toe cages.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Knocked the bike over next to me. We had the tray type bike racks and the bike had fatter tire so it was real balancing act. Helmet off hat on. That is it right. Yep what do I do now. Oh yeah run. Seemed weird but in a good way. Off I go finally.
What would you do differently?:

Leave the fat tire bike on the ground. It wasn't really a problem.
Run
  • 28m 23s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Hey this feels OK. AH it always does for the first half mile. Little crowded out flat to a uphill. Feeling OK. Half way up hill need to catch my wind. Oh sweet a flat so get going. Injured the right calf earlier this year but today the left is acting up. Just a twinge.

High five Mike he is looking good. Tell me to hit harder. Head down a hill and the calf is like slow down or I hit you. So need to back off a little. Try leaning forward, back, toe strike, nothing helped it behave. The second half was like mostly downhill.

Funny thing. I'm running down the main road in the town. We have the parking lane, still two lanes of traffic and here come a mini barn up the hill. Had to be a little hairy oversized load in restricted roadway. As it passes the Guy next to me headed up says "Great now I can say I have been passed by a BARN."

Come in at 1:40 or so -9 minutes for wave.
What would you do differently?:

I need to start running the run on these sprints like I am racing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked down the hill a little and slugged a bottle of water.
Found Mike coming back from getting his Chai. Discussed how I can run slower and slower and slower. Got a little pizza at least I finished before it was gone. Started to sprinkle and then rain, got bike and headed for the van. Got there just in time for it to stop raining.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

To many donuts. Speaking of donut the Skaneatles bakery makes some great ones.

Event comments:

Great race and good. Volunteers were great.
I was home by noon thanks to Mike. We didn't get lost once going home. The calf is behaving well. Its a little wake up call to get some weight off it.
