Age Group Rank = 8/10
Pre-race routine:

Stayed in Lenoir City night before. Woke at 5:30a, ate banana and drank 16-oz of water and 1/2 a cup of coffee. Dressed and drove the short distance to the TVA Tellico Lake access.
Event warmup:

Jogged 1/2 mile with 3 strides, then swam to the 1st bouy and back.
Swim
  • 19m 16s
  • 875 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my 1st competition open-water swim, so I was very tentative. I stayed back and to the left (away from the bouy line) to avoid the washing machine start. This cost me a little time, but likely the right move to avoid panic in this unfamiliar environment. I swam slow and steady and tried to sight off of the other swimmers, sometimes having to look up. I am satisfied that I survived without too much time-damage.
What would you do differently?:

I finished with a low heart rate, but need to train for a faster stroke rate.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

There was a medium length run to transition. The transition zone and run-out was on rough grass, so I put my shoes on in the transition and didn't attempt having them in the cleats. Pretty smooth in this transition with everything in place. My minimalist approach (no socks or gloves) really simplifies this aspect of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot, just get there fastest from the swim start. Also, I swam with my Pathfinder 305, but pushed start/stop, instead of the lap button. I didn't realize this until I was finishing the bike.
Bike
  • 49m 8s
  • 16.1 miles
  • 19.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Started a little slow for the 1st 1/2 mile, but then got to my race pace. Stayed in the aero-bars for most of the race when I was above 12mph. I continue to learn that I have an advantage on the hills as compared to other competitors.
What would you do differently?:

I forgot my mounting bracket for my aero water bottle, so I could have saved a few seconds with not having to break the aero position to drink.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

I was in good shape coming off the bike, so was calm and collected in T2. I used my new Yankz, so my shoes slipped on fine. Again, my minimalist approach makes the transitions simple.
What would you do differently?:

I took my sunglasses off; should have left them on. I might be able to pick up some speed through both T1/T2 now that I've got a good routine.
Run
  • 26m 1s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Good steady run. I was concerned about the building heat and humidity, so I paced at about 8:30. I still had some left at the end and wasn't spent when I finished.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have run a little faster. I think I was a little concerned about not having hydrated sufficiently on the bike. So, remember my aero-bottle bracket next time.
Post race
Warm down:

Short jog/walk & stretch, then got back in the water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need to swim faster.

Event comments:

I'm not clear why the transition zone was put in a field when there was sufficient pavement available. I didn't see anyone twist an ankle, but that was certainly a risk. The location of the T-zone also dictated your T-zone strategy, i.e. attaching your shoes to the bike, etc.
