Pre-race routine:

Set the alarm for 5am, woke up at 3:45am and never got back to sleep. I suppose I was anxious and excited, until I stepped outside and felt the humidity surround me. Uh-oh, Heat & Humidity are not my friend.
Event warmup:

yeah, um, just walking around was making me sweat. I was warm.
Swim
  • 15m 31s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Usually my worst leg. And definitely the leg that I worry the most about. Today was the opposite. I did OK in the swim, and it would be the last time all day I was doing well.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get more comfortable with freestyle/crawl, and do a lot less breast.
Transition 1
  • 04m 56s
Comments:

I stood up out of the water and realized that I was done. I couldn't get my heart rate down, and I couldn't find cool air to breathe. I hate the heat. Hate it. I didn't even try to hurry, just took my time hoping that my breathing would slow and my heart rate would fall. I was looking forward to the bike, and this transition had me worried that I wasn't going to have any strength for it.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more swimming, add longer swims, and practice biking after swimming.
Bike
  • 52m 32s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 13.13 mile/hr
Comments:

3 years ago I was able to average around 17mph on this course. I was hoping to do that again in this event. I struggled through the first mile, then was able to get a good pace going for the next 4 or 5 miles. But that was the end, the heat got to me, and my pace fell WAY WAY off. I was done, cooked.

On the way into the park, I was down under 10mph several times, just humbling and a bit humiliating.
Transition 2
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

I took my time. I knew I was done. No sense rushing off to walk.
Run
  • 45m 50s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 14m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Just a walk, mostly. I tried running here and there, but it was no use. I decided to make it home alive and just walk it out. Found it amusing as I shuffled down the homestretch and had my name called out.

The heat doesn't treat me well. All hope of anything remotely acceptable was gone. Just wanted to finish.
