Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4am to the sound of pouring rain; Left house by 4:30 - lightning along the way! Ate a granola bar and banana in the car and drank caffeinated crystal light
Event warmup:

Nothing really - chatted with friends for the hour+ between when transition closed and our waves went off.
  • 18m 26s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 15s / 100 yards

Had a good swim once I settled down and got out of the scrum. I think I got out too fast or get out of rhythym in the scrum and end up back stroking/dog paddling for a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Not freak out in the beginning
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s

Wetsuit got stuck on my calves again! (Left worse than right) This has happened a couple of times before - used body glide this time, but didn't seem to help
What would you do differently?:

Figure something out with wetsuit (cooking spray?) - otherwise transition went well
  • 48m 24s
  • 13.67 miles
  • 16.95 mile/hr

I had put a gel in my tri-top pocket, but it must have fallen out when I was struggling to get out of my wetsuit because it wasn't there when I went to get it at the turnaround. I was happy with the bike leg especially since I've had limited training time on the bike this year.
What would you do differently?:

Put gel in different pocket; Train on bike more (first time outside on bike this year!!)
Transition 2
  • 01m 23s

Got the right row, but missed my spot - took a few seconds to re-orient myself. First time racing in my Zoots - went on easily. Felt like this transition went very smoothly
What would you do differently?:

I made sure I counted rows, but somehow missed my spot - improving that would probably have saved 15 seconds or so...
  • 26m 26s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile

Felt pretty good considering had just raced on Thursday and had run on Saturday. Don't normally drink Heed, but had a little bit since I didn't get my gel on the bike. Wasn't as bad as I remembered it, but I did follow it with water.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed a little harder through the last mile.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank a bottle of water; went to change

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited bike training

Event comments:

Post race food is the best I've seen anywhere! I'd rate it higher if the road were better (promises of paving for next year - we'll see...) I was happy with my performance since I wasn't really expecting to do well coming off Corporate Challenge. The lake temperature was a nice surprise too as I worried for months about how cold that lake would be!!

Course: Is this really 13.67? When I put my pace in here, it doesn't match what it said in the results (17.3 mph pace) Nice course EXCEPT for the road conditions on 54A. The scary thing was that they said this was the best it's been - I would've hated to see what it was like last year! Had ridden parts of this course before including the biggest hill, so no surprises.
