Pre-race routine:

I got a gym membership in early Feb. and soon knew I needed to have a goal or motavation. I used to watch the Kona Ironman and dreamed of being of being in the race. I decided to start training.

The Dog House Spirit was the first I could find close enough to my home (two hours). I didn’t realize when I signed up that there were a couple of major hills in the bike course. I think this Sprint is a little bit harder than the average. Atleast that’s what I tell myself.

Event warmup:

Being my first triathlon I was a bit nervous. Adding to my stress my 2 year hasn’t been sleeping well the last week and a half leaving me more tired than normal. My right leg was bothering me a little. I was a little worried that I would hurt my leg and not be able to race. I did an extra light week.

I got up at 3:45 the morning on the race ate a peanut butter and honey sandwitch. Packed the car. At about 4:40 am got up my neice and my two year old and four year old in the minivan and headed on the two hour trip to Lubbock. I decided not to get a hotel in Lubbock mainly because of the cost. Since I hadn’t picked up my the day before I wanted to be sure I got there in plenty of time. I got there a little before 7am. My niece took care of my girls and I headed to get setup up.

Comments:

In the prerace meeting the race director said that the water was 62 degrees and wetsuits were strongly recommended. I grew up swiming in lakes. I even do some cliff jumping. But this would be my first OWS in my new wetsuit. And first OW race. I had a few preswim jitters.

My neice brought my girls down to the swim start. My four year old wanted to swim too and thought it was unfair I got to swim and she didn’t.

The gun went off and off we ran into the water. It didn’t feel too cold. I had a little contact but not too bad. Got swimming feeling good. The water is dark green can’t see much but I’m doing good. Then I run into a kayak, I stop and the nice lifeguard tells me I’m swimming in the wrong direction. Finally get back on the right course but now I’m worried about sighting and slowing to sight slows me down. But I make almost to the beach stand up when a someone yells don’t step there too last and tripped over something in the water. Two guys caught me before I got hurt but I was suddenly dizzy. I felt alittle better as the stippers ripped off my wetsuit.

Found my bike really easy it was one of the few left. I put on my helmet. My head still wasn’t feeling right. I sat down to put on my cycling shoes. I had everything ready but sat an extra minute to make sure my head was ok before starting the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I could have been faster but I wasn’t going to try to bike if my head wasn’t OK.

There is a pretty good hill coming out of T1 and I had to walk it. But as I’m walking up the hill with my bike I see neice and my girls walking down the hill. It was cool they walked back up with me. There was a really nice man walking his bike behind me and at the top he let me go first at the top. And a few minutes later My nephew passed me as he is driving in and yells at me. Gave me and extra boast to know he’d made it to support me. I kept pedaling. I thought a few times that "WOW my tri short padding is a lot less then my cycling shorts". The guy I walked up the first hill was behind me (not drafting) and it felt good to know he was there. On the very last hill on the way back as I was trying to pedal up a girl passed me then couldn’t keep going and stopped. I thought “Oh crap I’m going to crash”. I barely uncliped and got my foot down before I stopped. And I walked the last hill. Going down the last hill into transition was fast and fun. I did brake a little, didn’t want to crash.

What would you do differently?:

Practice, Practice, Practice hills. I walked three hills which didn’t help my time.

Comments:

As I start the run my friend from the bike is right behind me and we end up running together. His name is George and is 73. He shared his Gaterade jelly beans with me. We talk and talk. And it takes my mind off the running. The run was hilly and past homes. People sat in their front yards and cheered you on. Lots of cool homes I could live there. Got really excited at the turn around I was almost done. As we got around the last turn George’s family was there cheering . It was cool to see. He went ahead of me. Then I saw my nephew video taping me. So I gave him my victory arms in the air running dance through the finish.

What would you do differently?:

Just keep running. I’ll get faster as I build a base
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around with my girls and family. Waited for the awards. They did the male awards really quick but they said they had to take a break to figure out the womens awards. I joked with my nephew the reason they were delayed was I was going to podium. I had checked the last two year results and the had only been two or three people in my age group. So thought that it might be possible just by finishing and being lucky I might 3rd. So I was trash talking and joking with my nephew that I was going to place in my age group.

My first goal was to finish. Did that! Second was to finish under 2:30 and to run under 45. Cool, did that. So when they got to the my age group and I got 2nd place, I was shocked and happy. It was a good fun day. Not the easiest course for a first tri but I did it. Now I just need to go train biking hills so I can be faster next time. I had a blast. I think I’m hooked. Oh, and I think my nephew is going to give triathlons a try.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I just need to keep training. Just started. It will take a while to build my base.

Event comments:

I had an awesome time. Well run. I'd do another.
