Swim
Comments: Current seemed pretty strong. Started in the last wave (Novice), so not much worries about crowding. Aimed my start perfectly, by the time I made it out to the first turn I was right at the bouy. Swam straight and true, kept about 10 ft out from the bouys on the run North. Biggest problem: North run put my right (breathing) side into the oncoming chop, so had trouble getting quality breaths. Ended up side stroking last half. What would you do differently?: Need to get stronger swimming, calm down, and learn to breathe to both sides!! Transition 1
Comments: Prepped pretty well. Shoes already on pedals, rubber-banded to frame to keep them horizontal (Thanks Active.com for that nugget). Used a big water bottle with plain water to spray off my feet, Helmet, glasses, then off I went... What would you do differently?: Would have been nice if they had at least taken a leaf blower to the parking lot/transition area...Lots of debris (rocks, sand, pieces of palm tree). Bike
Comments: Was very happy with the bike leg. Used my older bike ('92 Trek 2100) with my Madone's wheels. Having the full aero bars and forward seatpost made 21-22mph for most of the ride very comfortable and easy. The only time I wish I had the lighter bike was on the bridge. Passed lots of people, noticed others pulling early u-turns (hmmph). What would you do differently?: Not much, short of getting a new bike that is light AND aero. Also, not having to haul quite so much of me up the hills would help (I've lost 50 lbs, need to lose another 30). Transition 2
Comments: Almost wrecked coming in...there were 2 people stopped, taking up 1/2 the road right at the transition entrance. As I was coming in, standing on 1 pedal ready to dismount, one of them turned left, right in front of me. I jammed on the brake, jumped off the bike, and narrowly missed her. Into transition barefoot and racked. Quck spray on the feet, shoes on, grabbed my hat and number belt, and out. What would you do differently?: Felt pretty good about the T2. Again, running through the debris wasn't ideal. Might bring 2 water bottles to rinse off next time. Run
Comments: Had trouble getting my HR under control. Went out slow, hoping to have a good negative split, but once I hit the turn around, I just didn't have it in the tank. I did manage to have a little kick for the last 200m, but not the run I was hoping for. What would you do differently?: train, train, train. Post race
Warm down: Walked (more like pacing) around the parking lot, then wandered around the mini expo. What limited your ability to perform faster: Conditioning, 30 lbs of excess baggage, shortage of swim training. Having said all that, I still pretty much hit my target time for the event. Event comments: Considering this was the first tri I've done since the 1980's, I'm pretty happy. Last updated: 2010-04-13 12:00 AM

Up at 4:45, banana, plain bagel, and some caffiene before leaving. Arrive onsite at 5:50. Body marked, chipped, and transition set up by 6:20. Lots of newbies like me in my transition block, so much fuddling by all to get things organized. No specific spots for everyone (blocks of 8 per rack). Stood around with my wife until we made our way to the beach for the start.
Quick jog up and down the beach, stretched. Waded a bit into the surf to get a feel for the water temp, but didn't swim to warm up.
