Swim
Comments: Swim started and I took off just a bit to the side of the main buoy line. The course was basically an out and back. Right off the bat it was me and 2 guys on the buoy line. We merged together after about 200 yards and 1 of the 2 guys fell off our feet. After that it was just me and kyle(my masters coach). Kyle wasn't holding a very good line and so I just worked on sighting and swimming my own race. At the turn around I was in 1st and Kyle was right on my heels. He passed me about 200 yards from the turn around and eventually opened up a small gap on me. This held until the end of the course. The course was a bit long I think. Kyle typically swims it in under 19 and his time was 20:55. That was nice, I was only 5 seconds off the lead. I finished 1:37 ahead of 3rd place. Very solid swim. Transition 1
Comments: Took way too much time here. Socks and shoes took too long to put on. Bike
Comments: There are a ton of hills on this course and the wind was blowing in every direction possible. It took me about 2 miles to get my legs under me and after that I managed to hold a steady pace. Coming up to the big 2 mile climb I switched to my little ring and just tried to spin my way up the hill. At the top when I switched to my big ring my chain fell off and I slowed my pedaling down to try and get it caught back on and it worked. Once we crested the big hill it was a nice 4 mile downhill. The cross winds were ridiculous here and I had 1 hand on the brake for most of the downhill. The hill was steep enough that my bike computer said I maxed out at 50 MPH. I coasted down most of the hill and really tried to take advantage of the speed for the next uphill. I feel like I really was holding a good steady pace after we finished all of the hills. Unfortunately I think I was pushing too hard. What would you do differently?: Well I went way faster than I thought I would, unfortunately I went too fast and paid for it severely on the run. Transition 2
Comments: Good speedy transition, passed a couple of people back. Run
Comments: Took off out of transition and was holding a strong steady pace. My goal time was about an 8:20 pace and my first mile went by in 8:14. At about the 1.5 mile mark I knew I was just flat out dead and was going to have a rough run. I walked for a short period and then ran again. Mile 2 went by in 8:40. Then the wheels came off the bus completely and I ended up walking/running the rest of the way to the finish. It was awful. My dreams of a sub 2:25 vanished and I just tried to get to the finish line. I walked every aid station and drank 2 cups of water at each one. I was holding over 10 minute miles the rest of the way and managed to make it to the finish. What would you do differently?: I needed to not go so hard on the bike. Running is my weakest event and killing my legs on the bike is just going to make it even worse. I also don't think I drank enough water on the bike. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Too fast on the bike. I gave it everything I had, but after my bike split I didn't have much left to give. Event comments: I do love this race and plan on doing it as long as I am racing. Last updated: 2010-04-13 12:00 AM
