Pre-race routine:

Had a few whole wheat waffles with honey, some strawberries, and a couple of ensures. Took a shower, loaded up the truck and rolled out.
Event warmup:

Jog and swim. Light stretching.
Swim
  • 11m 28s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

My goggles where fogging up something horrible. Combined with the sun in my eyes (clear mask) it made it very difficult to sight buoys for half of the course. Thankfully there where enough folks around me that I could use them to guage my navigation.
What would you do differently?:

Use my tinted goggles instead of my clear mask. Also, finding an anti fog that works might be a good idea.

Comments:

We had a nice headwind on the way out, which meant a wonderful tailwind on the way home. The bike course was outstanding. Newly paved road, virtually no traffic, and plenty of open space. The only gripe was that I think I might have missed the turnaround due to a super small sign if it wasn't for being behind (3 bike lengths, of course =) to another athlete who was familiar with the course. I was able to average about 18-19 on the way out, and kept it between 26-28 on the way back. Overall I was pleased with my physical and mental effort considering I hadn't trained in months.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

Super fast T2. Only second to the overall male winner. Very pleased with this.
Run
  • 28m 8s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

As mentioned in the bike section, my traning over the past few months has been almost non-existent. I can see that by far that run fitness is the first thing to go. This is normally my strength, but I was unable to get it going, and atleast I know that it was due to lake of training and not lack of effort on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Train. I also forgot to take a gu at the start of the run, which was part of my race plan.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

Based on my expectations due to my lack of training, I am pleased with the results of this race in a way, but I am also very dissapointed because I know that I could have done much better if I hadn't neglected my training leading up to the race. 2nd place finished about 20 seconds ahead of me, so I know if my run fitness was where it is capable of being and normally is, I would have definitely moved up a spot. All in all, lesson learned. I gotta get out and train!!
