Pre-race routine:

Laid everything out the night before. Only I didn't go out to look at my bike...BIG mistake! When I got out there at 5:15 I had a flat and realized no extra tubes. So I high tailed it to the course and got a hand from the Wheel and Sprocket guys. I also left my garabage bags in the car...more on that later...
Event warmup:

I headed over to the trasition area at about 7:00 to cheer on my co-workers who were doing the Super Sprint. They were waiting on life guards and then it clouded up...and started thundering. So we had to clear the beach. What happened after that was a mad rush to try to cover up my gear (ahh...yes the garbage bags were in the car). I waited out the first rain storm. Then there were rumors of 70 mile per hour winds. I headed to the car to get the garbage bags and covered my stuff. Ran into the brown building to wait out the big storm. Finally around 9:30 we got started. I did a warm up lap in the water and then treaded water while waiting for my start...what a way to start a race!
Swim
  • 17m 28s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

I did well considering the crazy start. I was a bit under trained for this one and through about the 2 bouy felt really tired...and was worried that I wouldn't make it. Then I got into a rhythm and the rest of the swim went well. I am much more comfortable in open water than I used to be. I even hit back the couple people that hit me!
What would you do differently?:

I could use a little more practice sighting and I need to get away from those breast strokers!
As always more practice
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

After rain storm number 2 and they finally started the race. I for some reason decided to assume it was done raining. So as I went off to get ready for the swim - I didn't recover my transition gear, I worked so hard to keep dry earlier. So by the time I got into the transition my shift and bike shoes (tennis shoes and socks too) were soaking wet. Really I had puddles in my shoes. So it took a bit to get my tank on and my bike shoes were really wet. But once I got them on neither bugged me a bit.
What would you do differently?:

REMEMBER MY GARABAGE BAGS AND KEEP MY STUFF COVERED NO MATTER WHAT!
Bike
  • 47m 57s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 15.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike results are a little messed up. For many people there is no rank. Don't know why exactly. Because of the late start the Olympic distance people had to do the Sprint, so it might have something to do with that.

My bike was OK. I think I could have pushed harder. But I had problems with my back tire. I don't know if I still had a valve problem or after the flat was fixed it wasn't filled properly. In any case I spent the a lot of time worring about falling because of the VERY wet ground and slightly flat back tire. Augh! Also had another race first - the police actually stopped us to let traffic through...probably for about 2 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

I need to make sure to have a spare tube an CO@ cartridge with my gear - if anything to give me piece of mind. I also want to get more comfortable with speed.
Transition 2
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

So I have no transisiton data. I am assuming about 2:30. I did well considering my socks were completely soaked - really they looked like I had swam in them. My shoes were wet as well.
What would you do differently?:

GARBAGE BAGS!!!
Run
  • 33m 16s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went well considering I I was very undertrained for this. I realized as I started if I pushed just a little I had a good change of PR-ing...so that is exactly what I did. Walked twice once up a hill and through an aid station. The fact that it was lightly raining helped considerably otherwise it would have been HOT!
What would you do differently?:

I need to get my mileage back up and really start pushing myself. I have the ability to be more than just a plodder. I would like to get back down under 10 minute miles.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. Chatted with a couple other people in tranistion

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training was really all it was this time around. Between the new house, 4th of July, and summer travel...it hasn't been the best training summer for me. It was nice to have some people I knew there this time and we are going to do Whitewater in October!
Plus I did PR - even without the training!

Event comments:

This race has the potential to be spectacular! It was a first year race. Communication about everything was great and even with all the crazy weather - the organizers still did everything they could to get it off and make it work. I would highly recommend it and who doesn't support a cause like Children's Hospital!
