Swim
Comments: I think I seeded myself a little low as I spent the whole swim passing people. No problem in the wide lanes. Swim was good - didn't go out too fast and managed to keep on pace the whole time. Also didn't swallow too much water, which was nice. What would you do differently?: Maybe go out a little faster - I had gas left in the arms at the end of the swim. Pretty happy with the swim. Would have been nice to draft off someone. Transition 1
Comments: No problems here. Transition time included in the bike split. Probably 2 minutes or so. Bike
Comments: Heading out to the first turnaround I was getting a bit worried - but it turned out that the majority of the out section is uphill. So it was more like 5 minutes out and 3 minutes back. Did really well here - I passed a lot of people and didn't get passed at all. Made sure to pedal on the downhills which a lot of folks were coasting. Pretty happy with my time though I still think I could have gone a bit harder. What would you do differently?: Go harder. Sit in my drops more. Buy a faster bike with aero wheels. Transition 2
Comments: Bike shoes off, running shoes on. Not much to it. Time also included in the bike time. Probably only a minute here. Run
Comments: Left transition, ran up a hill, started down another hill and WHAMO got hit with a brutal side stitch. Shouldn't have had anything to drink on the bike but was feeling parched. So the stitch lasted through the entire uphill portion of the run (half the run!). Got passed by a few people in this chunk. Legs felt fine though. Had to walk a little section and try and work the stitch out. Once the downhill started I was good - lots of gas left in my legs, but pretty hard to catch up much time. Last 5 minutes I was at a proper race pace. Not happy with the run though. What would you do differently?: Not drink anything on the bike - or at least have a better idea of what the run course was like. I haven't had a stitch like that for a long long time. Probably cost me 2 or 3 minutes. Oh well. Running is my limiter. Post race
Warm down: Ate a bagel. Stood around watching people coming in. Caught up with my wife and kidlet who showed up too late to see me actually race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Didn't really do any training specific to sprint races - I've mostly been doing endurance work. Event comments: Not bad overall. This being my first triathlon ever, I was pretty pleased with the whole thing. I figure a few more of these things and I might be able to get the pacing right. Can't wait for the next one. Up at 6:30. Was paranoid about missing my alarm so essentially woke up at 5:00 and checked the clock every 5 minutes until 6:30. Breakfast of cereal and milk. Throw all my crap into the truck and head on over to the course. Parked a million miles away and rode my bike down to transition. Set up transition, get changed and start the waiting until my swim time came up...
Stood in a line up waiting to get into the pool.
