Pre-race routine:

The week I'd had was a humdinger of work drama so I got appropriately inebriated on Friday night in order to cap it off. So Saturday was spent hastily trying to rehydrate and cursing the fact that I kind of suck at drinking. (should probably practice more) One thing I did do that I might start adding to my day-before routine was I drank a glass of coconut water. It tastes like smurf pee but I felt great after drinking it. It just sort of zapped the hangover. (and no, I don't actually know what smurf pee tastes like but I'm assuming it can't be good)
Event warmup:

Woke up at 4. Mixed up a brekkie of greek yogurt, blueberries and honey (also soon to be added to my arsenal of "stuff I do before a race") Hit the road, put the new Hanson single on repeat and sang my brains off all the way to Neenah. (Haven't heard the new Hanson single or seen the video yet? Oh boy..... Warning - it's highly addictive http://tinyurl.com/y6zdtpj)

Got the race, ran into Lrunfit, looking very sad and pale having spent the previous day playing Vomit Scrabble (but still managed to come up with a good race because she is an animal) Found schwimmycoach and djdavey, bantered and smack talked for a bit, then warmed up with schwimmycoach.

Comments:

I had ZERO ZERO expectations for this race. I genuinely wanted to just enjoy the experience, enjoy hanging with my friends and enjoy the fact that I CAN race. So I was feeling really loose and excited at the start. My first mile was 6:56, looked at my watch and grinned - I knew it was going to be a good day. I did let go of the pace a little bit after that first mile though - backed off to a 7:30 mile on the second one. I'm ok with that - it does give me confidence that I have a nifty little 5k PR hiding up my sleeve this summer.

I got some extra nutrition in on the run by swallowing a fly. SO GROSS! These flies were like prehistoric sized monsters. HUGE. And swarms of them. It was honestly so disgusting. You had to shade your eyes and close your mouth when you ran along the water after mile 1. I choked on a fly and started coughing and sputtering the darn thing out. Some girl passed me laughing (I was being a little over dramatic about it - what me? yes, it's true)
What would you do differently?:

eh - nothing I think. I'm pretty happy with that. I'm also pretty happy that I only have to wait a few more days for the entire Hanson album to come out. I can only listen to that one song so many times. And yes - I had that ONE song in my head the entire race. Oh - well, no that's not entirely true - one of Hanson's other songs was peppered in there too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRY-J5YkLmQ Not sure what spawned on my recent Hanson obsession... wait, why am I talking about Hanson so much? this is a race report! Ok, back to business....

Comments:

huh huh.... well, I don't have elastic laces and I had forgotten to take out the double knot in my shoe so Fail x2. I was actually taking my sweet arse time in transition so the fact that I kept it under 5 minutes is rather impressive, imo.
What would you do differently?:

I should really consider some of them der elastic laces eh

Comments:

This was the first time I've raced with this bike. I haven't been riding a whole lot this spring (maybe 4 times total??) so I had no idea what to expect. But here's some things I discovered on the ride:

- the big chain! ohh, what's that? ::fiddle with the gears:: oompf, oh! Nice! I can go faster, who knew?

- In the battle of nash vs the flies, the flies win this round. I should have worn a long sleeve shirt just to protect my arms from the kamikazee attacks. At one point you had to bike through this giant swarm, BLURG!

- my saddle is totally not the right saddle for me. Ouch! Luckily I had a kind friend who sprayed biofreeze down my pants for me at the end of the race. (that is what friends are for, right?)

Comments:

This one was a bit better but I had trouble tying my shoes because, well, I just learned how last week. Yes it's true, I've spent my entire life in velcro white tennis shoes.

Comments:

This first mile was really tough for me - I really felt like I was just shuffling along. I wasn't too concerned about it since I was still just enjoying it but ugh - my feet just would not move! I finally started to loosen up in the second mile and was able to pick up the pace a bit (first mile was 7:46 which shocked me - felt more like a 9 to me).
What would you do differently?:

ignore the waffle irons attached to my legs and just run.
Post race
Warm down:

found the other donkeys, enjoyed some chatter and sun. I was sitting with djdavey eating and I was literally mid-sentence when all of a sudden he bolted out of his chair and was 50 feet away when I heard his far-off mutter of something about chocolate milk. He had sniffed it out from outside and his finely tuned senses told him a new batch of chocolate milk had been laid on the food table. He was back in about 30 seconds loaded down with cartons of the crack and we happily downed the sweet nectar - mmmmmm..... man that stuff is good.

Event comments:

Awesome way to start off the season - really looking forward to green bay now!
