Pre-race routine:

Accidentally slept in a bit, good thing I had my stuff ready. Just got out of bed wrong, I was not "with it" early on and it continued through the day.
Event warmup:

easy run up and down side street with a mile bike
Swim
  • 08m 28s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a good start for me, the last few years for some reason I underachieve vs. training in the swim at this race. Funny thing, an old co-worker and I are in the same wave. We start and this guy keeps battling me for position, really p's me off. So we continue for the full 440 and even traded positions at the beach, we get out of the water and both say "you!", it was my buddy. Funny. He high stepped it out of the water and I took my time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Did ok in this transition, the lady next to me had her brake cable wraped on my brake levers, did not see that racking. So, that got snagged and felt bad leaving her bike 1/2 on the rack. Cost me probably some time.
Bike
  • 37m 42s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 21.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really focuced on the bike, at mile 3 I dropped my water bottle. I opted for a bottle vs my aero-bottle for comfort in the cockpit, dumb move on my part. No water for 10 miles does not seem bad until you gel and then have a goopy mouth plus the humidity and dehydration. Caught my buddy at mile 4 on the bike. This moving truck decides to make a left turn in the middle of the race, that was fun dodging him and the cargo van. It was something like the pod racer scene from star wars.
What would you do differently?:

aerobottle yes.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

Only part I remember doing ok. Dismount was really good, I jumped off a fast moving bike, one guy got mad he thought I was "cheating". I was well before the line and had to laugh. One person dismounting was uncleating and turned left into my path, had to shout to avoid crash. I am now officially the "T2 Terror" from reports.
What would you do differently?:

Be more of a terror on the swim, bike, and run.
Run
  • 25m 23s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Run did not materialize like I hoped. I felt really droopy, things did not click until maybe mile 2-2.5. Then I passed people well but I think I threw away a good 45 sec. in the previous 1.5 mile.
What would you do differently?:

More rest before race. I have been really training hard these past two weeks, not enough rest. Last year I did 20 sec/mi faster, but then I had a taper week too to go with this race week.
Post race
Warm down:

jog back up course to say hi to friends who visited

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Rest and a bad use of alarm clock

Event comments:

Always a good race to do, the events "on time" I had to say yes but the race was weather delayed 45 min, not the RD's fault. Car traffic on the course was hell this year, a moving truck and others were obstacles. Need better traffic management, only gripe. This was my first tri 5 years ago, and 5 seasons and 5 races later, its always good to come back home for this one.
