Swim
Comments: I knew going into this my swim would not be fast as I focused on more bike and run training in the last month. This was where I expected to be, around the 1:30 mark so was pleased with this. What would you do differently?: Now that I have my first full Ironman under my belt, will refine the swim training to work on speed. I know I have room for improvement here and will get a swim coach. Transition 1
Comments: This was way too long! The men change tent was so full when I arrived that there was no place to sit down, nor were there any volunteers there to help. Not a big issue but had to stand off to the side to do my T1. On the way out, had to hit the pot. This definitely added about 4-5 minutes to my T1. What would you do differently?: Not allow myself to get flustered in T1 when things are not going as planned. Relax and I would have done this faster. Regarding the pot, try to figure out how I can "clear out" before the race. Bike
Comments: Starting the bike was a bit chilly and was glad I purchased the arm warmers on Saturday. I think they really helped out. Was told by several people to take it easy until you hit Richter Pass, which I felt I did. Passed several other riders on the uphill sections and there was only a few riders passed me on the downhills that I didn't catch up to and pass on the flats or uphills. The out and back was bumpy, but knew that coming in. The special needs bag was great to have on the bike! Ate part of a pb & j bun, some salt and vinegar chips and took some life saver candies onto the bike. Great treat! 120 km done, then hit the headwind and a bit of rain. The rain was mostly past me and just got the end of it. This slowed me down a bit but still passing bikes until the end of the bike course. What would you do differently?: Not load up on drink at the base of Richter Pass. Yeesh! Part way up, I noticed my gaff and had a good laugh. I think I could have pushed it a bit harder on the bike. Really enjoyed the climbs! Transition 2
Comments: This was quite a blur and the volunteers were excellent here. I was able to sit down and do what I needed to do. Taking the time to change socks and put more body glide on my feet really helped. Blisters were not an issue. Had to stop at the pot for a short break there but better that T1. What would you do differently?: Maybe run into and out of T2. Run
Comments: 2 miles into the run, my foot started to really bother me. I was on a scout hike in the Mount Robson area (Berg Lake - 72 km hiking in 5 days) and rolled the ankle a bit on the last day. I just told myself that I wasn't going to let it get me down. Another pit stop in a potty. Groan. Oh well. With that being said, I was very pleased with this run. I passed a lot of people, nutrition plan was working for me. Ran all except a short distance of the big return hill and walked most of the aid stations. Every half hour ate and every aid station took in a bit of gatoraid/water (alternating). The special needs bag was awesome on the run too. Same stuff as on the bike and liked having the life saver candy to suck on during the run. Pushed harder in the last 3 miles and ran through the last 4 aid stations only taking water. I also like the overall place difference from the swim (2273) to run (1264) was over a 1000! What would you do differently?: NOT go on a scout hike a week before my A race. Trying to fit too many things into an already busy schedule. I would like to do another couple of marathons before my next full Ironman race to see what kind of time I can get with just the marathon. Post race
Warm down: Volunteers here were excellent!! Crossed the finish line and instantly had 2 there to help keep me stable. I needed it. They took me over to the photo shoot, then asked what I needed next. Did not need the medical tent, just to eat something and sit down. They stayed with me for quite a while. Thanked them and sent them back to the line. Very friendly and helpful! Met up with Becky and had some pizza. Another volunteer grabbed my dry clothes bag, which I really needed as I was getting cold. Putting on another layer and drinking a couple of cups of chicken broth really helped. What limited your ability to perform faster: Maybe taking it a bit easier on the swim and the bike than I could have. The foot problem on the run (but was very pleased with the run results). Very happy with the race! Event comments: This was such an amazing event! There were many "firsts" for me - first full Ironman, first full marathon, first IMC, etc. It was great that the names were on the race bibs. I felt I had thousands of fans cheering me on, and I did! The volunteers? Incredible! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Cannot state that enough. Am I a "one time Ironman finisher"? NOT! I will do this race again and will try other full Ironman distance races in the future, near future I hope. Last updated: 2010-04-27 12:00 AM

This was such an amazing week. One of my training partners and I drove from home (Fort Saskatchewan, AB) to Penticton on Wednesday. After we got settled in our Summerland motel, we went for a short bike ride. Good stretch and very hilly!
So many helpful people. As I was standing in line to pay for my purchases, one of the other participants overhead us lamenting about how long the registration line was. They told us not to worry and try again after lunch as the line typically is much shorter then. She was right and we didn't have to stand in the line for an hour, just a few minutes. There were so many other instances of this and looked for opportunities to share these little tidbits of information with others.
Friday am went for a short run and other training partner arrived. Just milled around the Ironman village. Maybe too much walking around?
Saturday, completed the written nutrition plan and did a short swim to get the feel for the lake water temperature. It was quite a bit warmer than back home.
Thought I wouldn't sleep well Saturday night, but was not the case and slept pretty good. Woke up at 3:30 AM, ate the usual pb & j toast, banana and a chocolate protein shake. Left the motel at 5:00 AM. Body marking took quite long and there were several markers down the street with no athletes, but it all worked out in the end. A bit frantic time there. Helped Becky into her wetsuit, then got in the water about a minute before the start. This is it!
