Swim
Comments: I asked the "lane girl" to put the kickboard in the water when I had 50yds left. Only two of us in the lane so we just went next to each other instead of circle, which was nice. Started off strong, lapped the guy who started before me. After swimming awhile I thought I had done 10 laps and then I noticed the guy I had lapped exiting the pool! WTF? I stand up and the guy is yelling that I am done. I sprint to the wall and get out and the lane girl is apologizing. Not your fault really, I should learn to count to ten What would you do differently?: Count my own damn laps Transition 1
Comments: I think my T1 time was actually more than this because as I get to my rack position and take my bike off I realize the thing that everyone dreads: flat tire on the rear. After the swim debacle I considered cashing it in for a second. Luckily I got a sweet parking space and remembered that I had my trainer wheels in the car. Ran out of T1, to my car, got the wheel, back to T1. Threw the wheel on, arm warmers and helmet, and away I went! What would you do differently?: Not have a flat tire. Picked up a sharp rock in the tire on the warmup ride Bike
Comments: Get out of T1 and with all the drama my toe covers had half come off and were inside of my shoe so I weaved all over the place trying to get my feet in the shoes. Got going pretty well until just after the water bottle hander-outers where there is a hill. Downshifted and dropped my chain! Not normally a big deal, but this time reaching down and pulling the chain back onto the ring wasn't working so I had to stop and get off. After a couple of tries I realized the chain had gotten sucked in between the chainring and chainstay and was stuck. I had to slowly remove it for fear of damaging the frame. Little metal protector came off with the chain, scared me a little, but frame looks just fine. Whew. That was a minute + wasted, but back onto my bike. A couple of miles later a sharp turn came up and forgot that I no longer have my race wheel with carbon braking surface on the rear, and that cork brake pads on wet aluminum rims DO NOT work well for slowing down. Had to do a bit of offroading into the ditch, but I kept it upright and finished the bike without further incident What would you do differently?: Not drop the chain, not have a flat tire, remember to brake a little earlier, and maybe push just a little harder Transition 2
Comments: not sure what happened with the rest of my times, did the rolling dismount and ran back into T2 without issue. Put on the running shoes and visor and ran out What would you do differently?: not much Run
Comments: Legs felt a little rubbery at first, got into the trails and dodged the big mud puddles as best as I could. Just kept pushing while making sure I didn't take a digger. Not sure what my actual time was, don't know why the timing chip didn't work and the Garmin won't download right now What would you do differently?: Didn't affect the race performance, but got a pebble in the shoe and didn't notice the nice blister on my heel until after the race Post race
Warm down: showered all the mud off, packed up all the crap from transition and got the text message from wifey that she is violently ill. 2 hours later I was completely bed ridden with food poisioning from olives that Ellen and I had eaten the night previous. Had a funny feeling in the stomach during the whole race, but thought it was just the product of going hard What limited your ability to perform faster: mechanical and human errors Event comments: Not the race I was hoping for, but considering I was only 67 seconds slower than last year with all the mishaps, I was happy with the performance. Hopefully got all the bad ju ju out in this race so my next few are relatively uneventful Last updated: 2010-04-28 12:00 AM

Ate a Clif Bar for breakfast, loaded up and sipped GE while on my way to Whitewater.
Racked the bike, went for a nice 10 minute warmup jog with some stretching drills. Ten minute bike warmup, rerack the bike, and a few laps in the diving well before waiting for my turn in the pool
