Swim
Comments: The swim felt great. This being my first experience, it took me a bit to get aclimated and get used to getting hit and running into people. I felt like I sighted pretty well and got into a rhythm pretty quickly. What would you do differently?: I would be more aggressive at the beginning. I paused a few times when I would swim up on someone. Next time I will know just to go around them without breaking stroke. Transition 1
Comments: With no aerobars, I didn't have a way to balance my helmet on my bike, so it was on the ground. I also don't have clips and am using cages, so I had to put on socks and my running shoes. I thought everything went pretty smooth until the mount line where I had a bit of a hang up trying to get into my cages. What would you do differently?: Either get clip pedals, or get better at getting into my cages. Figure out a better way to position my helmet. Bike
Comments: The bike is where I need the most work, it is also where I have the least experience. It felt good, I probably could have pushed a bit harder, but I was having fun. One joker spectator thought it would be funny to yell that they had switched the course back to a 40K. It wasn't that funny. What would you do differently?: I think with more time on the bike, I will improve. Transition 2
Comments: One foot got just a bit caught up getting out of my cages, not a big deal. Had just a slight hang-up racking the bike. What would you do differently?: I would put on my race number at T-1. More experience and practice will help me improve. Run
Comments: The run felt really good, I felt like I had a good pace and stride going. Saw Noz and that pushed me along. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder at the end. Post race
Warm down: Not much, walking around trying to find friends and family. Had to scramble to get my stuff and get out of there due to impending bad weather. What limited your ability to perform faster: Only lack of experience. Training was good, especially because I was focusing on an Olympic distance race. Event comments: Hy-Vee puts on a huge event. I think that they did the best that they could possibly due given the weather situation. There were tons of vendors, lots of food, and lots of other give aways. My family left with a huge bag full of free stuff. Not to mention the backpack 'o swag for the athletes. There was a bit of a bottle neck getting over the bridges that went over the run out, probably wouldn't have been as bad if everyone wasn't scrambling to get out of there to avoid the storm. This was my first race, so I didn't have an established routine. I got there very early, just after transition opened. Got my stuff set up, the way I had planned and got my bike tires blown up. I was glad I got that out of the way early because a huge line formed as more people showed up. I talked to Noz, and waited for the race to start. I started hearing people talking about weather rolling in later that morning, and was a bit concerned. Then, about an hour before the race the announcement came that they were shortening the distance to a sprint. The swim was changed to a 400, the bike to 20K and the run to 5K. A bit disappointing, but what can you do?
I headed down to the beach and swam probably about 200M. I hadn't had any open water practice, so I figured I had better at least get aclimated a bit.
