Mighty Montauk, New York
United States
Total Time = 3h 11m 27s
Overall Rank = 502/581
Age Group = F35-39
Age Group Rank = 20/28
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 5:10 and had a luna bar and bottle of water, then got dressed and headed out.
Event warmup:

Rode my bike the 1 mile from hotel to race site. That's about it.
Swim
  • 44m 6s
  • 1609 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Water was cold but bearable. I am a slow swimmer. I think I will always be a slow swimmer. Still, I was OK with my time. There was a little more chop on the way back in. I think I went extra conservative on the first half because my last oly was a disaster as far as the swim went.
What would you do differently?:

Push the swim a little harder. Try to learn how to draft better ( hard to do when you are one of the slowest in your wave).
Transition 1
  • 03m 28s
Comments:

It was a very long run up from swim to the transition area. Overall I was very pleased with my T1 time. I placed 209 overall. I do run with the bike in my bike shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Bike
  • 1h 11m 2s
  • 20 miles
  • 16.89 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to train more hills. That's all there is to it. I am undertrained as far as hills go. The course is a nice scenic route.
What would you do differently?:

Train hills!
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

When I came back into transition I passed my rack and had to double back. Then, I was missing one running shoe- found it down the aisle in the middle of the aisle. Visor also missing- found that 2 spots over. So I was a little pissed that someone basically ransacked my area. That definitely affected my T2 time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing other than make sure I don't pass my rack
Run
  • 1h 10m 47s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I struggled from about the 1 mile mark to the end. I had a side stitch that was relentless. Nothing I did could make it go away so the entire run was a mix of me doing a shuffle run/walk the whole way. I know I hydrated well leading up to the race, and during the bike. I think the stitch was more of a monthly cramp thing going on...
What would you do differently?:

Work on run fitness
Post race
Warm down:

Found my friend and my sister, had some orange slices and water and headed back to hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

need more training time. Don't really have a good base built up since I was busy with personal stuff all winter, but am keeping at it since the spring and doing what I can.

Event comments:

Montauk is a great race venue. I would definitely consider doing this race again next year.
