Pre-race routine:

Awoke 3 hours prior to race start and ate oatmeal and started hydrating. Had a hammer gel and cup of coffee within 30 minutes of race start.
Event warmup:

Light stretching around camp fires provided by the race organizers.
Run
  • 4h 47m 19s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 10m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Overall the run went well. I did let myself become dehydrated and that hit me at about mile 20 where I had to start walking to the next aid station. I slugged down about five cups of fluids and within another quarter mile of walking I got my run back and was able to finish off the race at a decent run pace.
What would you do differently?:

I needed to stay on top of my hydration needs better.
Post race
Warm down:

Immediate fluids and a lunch combining both protien and carbs. Light stretching and a warm shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't drink enough at the aid stations.

Event comments:

Runners World rated this race as one of the best small races in the U.S., I'd have to say I agree.

My average HR was 156, which is a good HR for me at the Marathon distance. Miles 0 - 5; 9:30 pace. Miles 5 - 10; 9:56 pace. Miles 10 - 15; 9:48 pace. Miles 15 - 20; 11:20 pace. Miles 20 - 25; 15:07 pace. (here is where I had to walk a while due to dehydration) Miles 25 - 26.2; 8:21 pace. Thank you water and a good finishing kick!
Course: The race kicked off with the first six miles taking place on a dirt road leading out of the Superstition Mountains. The road was fairly smooth, winding and had some nice small rollers but was generally downhill. Runners were surrounded on both sides by southern Arizona’s signature saguaro cactus and all other manner of desert plants. It was easily the most scenic race I’ve been in and there were even a few folks running with cameras who were stopping intermittently to take pictures. The dirt road wound down to highway 60 where we turned west to run about two miles until heading back north into the Gold Canyon Estates. The run looped through the subdivision, which was filled with very nice homes and several locals who had come out to cheer us on. The course through here contained a lot of climbing but they tended to be long climbs at about 4% grades so it was not bad. The route continued on like this the majority of the race, in and out of residential areas, rolling hills and one little out and back where the marathon course began to overlap with the half-marathon course. One of the most interesting parts of the course, the Dutchman’s Revenge, includes a strip of dirt road about 100 yards long that climbs at about a 14% grade. It takes place at mile 22 and there is a plywood façade of a brick wall for you to run through at the top of the hill so, if you are either tall enough or have enough energy, you can literally hit the wall.
