Pre-race routine:

A bowl of cereal with a banana, Gatorade while setting up
Event warmup:

Static stretching while in my wet suit
Swim
  • 59m 35s
  • 1312 yards
  • 04m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was very happy with my swim, it wasn't all that fast, but I felt really good when existing the water and didn't let the tide push me past the last bouy.
What would you do differently?:

Try to draft a little better.
Transition 1
  • 07m 4s
Comments:

A long run across a freshly cut open field to get to T1 (I estimate a 1/4 mile) overall happy with my T1
What would you do differently?:

I used a water bottle to clean my feet, I could have been a little faster, but I use this time to get myself ready for the bike
Bike
  • 3h 15m 56s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.15 mile/hr
Comments:

The pavement was rough on a good 50% of the back roads. The course was open to traffic, had to stay close to the right edge of the road, not a big deal it took a little more concentration toward the end of the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Get longer training rides in. I was starting to fade at the end of the ride.
Transition 2
  • 03m 6s
Comments:

For me it was a good T2, no mishaps, my legs started to feel a litte spent.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 2h 26m 10s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

terrible pain in my second toe on my right foot started at mile 7, I was concerned my toe nail was falling off. I didn't stop and look for the fear I wouldn't continue the race if I saw my toe nail was off. It turned out to be a blister, it still hurt.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure anything, mile 7-13.1 my toe was killing me, my legs fatigued and I was just exhausted.
Post race
Warm down:

bottle water, 1 free beer at the beer tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Did not train long enough distances, my body was starting to shut down by the end of the race from exhaustion.

Event comments:

This was my first HIM, one of the reasons I picked this race was because it was flat. I would highly recommend for first HIM. Did not put in enough long workouts due to work schedule or I feel I could have done better time wise. Overall I am very happy to completed my first HIM and really enjoyed our stay in the Williamsburg, VA area.

Course: One Loop, the course was open to traffic I didn't feel it was a problem, the intersections well posted, vehicle traffic wasn't an issue. A flat course, a couple little hills, it felt good to get up out of the saddle. By mile 50 I was ready to be finished with the bike, very sore in the saddle. I never truely dial in my seat in training and by mile 50 I was feeling it.
