Swim
Comments: felt aweful the first length then settled in. seems like that is my general experience in the water. i was the in the far right of the second lane from the left. i tried to exit the pool by climbing out at the end of my lane, but my shorts almost fell off so i crossed over two lanes and exited by the ladder. this probably cost me 30 seconds or more. i'm guessing that my actual swim time was probably around 19 minutes or so. What would you do differently?: get in the water and tighten up my shorts' pullstring so they don't fall off when i exit. Transition 1
Comments: my T1 time was slower than i wanted, but about a half a minute faster than my last tri. it was very cold, windy, and rainy so i took the extra time to put a hoody pullover and full gloves on. i also decided to put the headband on to keep my helmet up out of my eyes, but did that quick and didn't waste much time on it. What would you do differently?: i also used a 6 or 7 gallan bucket to both hold my transition equipment and food and to serve as a stool to change my shoes. it worked well except that, due to my short time to get ready, i had more than i needed in the bucket, so when i turned the bucket upside down it covered the extra stuff that i had. this wasn't a problem until i went to sit on it and moved slightly to a more useful position and had to deal with the junk that was under it. not a major problem, but a lesson learned. keep it empty. need to practice T1 over and over again. Bike
Comments: this was the windiest course i've raced in competition or in practice. i was cruising during the first quarter of the race since it was primarily with a tailwind. i was often in the 20s and averaged 19.8. then most of the nest quarter was with a crosswind and that slowed me down. i was at 16.7 at the turnaround. the return i was either in the crosswinds or directly in the head wind. What would you do differently?: keep training Transition 2
Comments: this time is an estimate and probably an underestimate. i could only track the minutes on my stopwatch because the seconds are too small once i hit an hour's time. so i was in T2 from 1-2 minutes. i felt like i did alright. i just took off my helmet and switched shoes and took a quick drink of gatorade from my bike waterbottle. probably a faster T2 than last tri, but still plenty or room for improvement What would you do differently?: no drink, empty bucket Run
Comments: couldn't find my legs for the first mile. my feet were numb from the cold and wind and rain (i wore my sandal cleats because they are the fasted to get on and off. i got a blister under my right ankle. not sure if it was caused exclusively by running or if maybe i cut or scratched it during my bike crash and then it worsened in the run. i didn't notice it until i'd finished the run. i was dead by the time of the run and could not push it at all. i started the swim just in front of a guy who said he just learned to swim last year and could do the swim in about 16:30, which is about 3 minutes faster than me. i was the last out of the water, but transitioned faster than him and he was just a head of me as we left on the bike. i passed him quickly (probably due to the fact that i was on a tribike and he was on a run of the mill mountain bike). he wasn't too far behind be at the turnaround, but never caught me when i crashed and was down for about 2:45. he must have been not too far behind me at the bike finish and we left for the run with him just a step or two ahead of me. he quickly outpaced me on the run and i was by myself in last place. after about 2 miles of the run, i came upon an elderly participant who race walked. i finally caught and passed him as we were circling the senior center. i don't know if i beat him or not for total time. What would you do differently?: practice biking, T2, and running so i can find my legs quicker. Post race
Warm down: i was sad at the finish because non of my family was there to cheer me on. the were poolside during the swim and out in the road as i finished the bike, but nowhere to be seen at the end of the run. then i walked in and they were in the middle of the awards ceremony. i needed to tend to my bloody leg and blister, but had to wait until the ceremony was over and i met up with the family. by the time i cleaned my wound the kids were getting ready for their pups tri so i did not have a second to rest as i was cheering them on. then we packed up and left for the LHOP for lunch and then home. i was dead and susan drove. i went right to sleep for about a 45 minutes or so until we stopped for gas. What limited your ability to perform faster: weather, still out of shape, but did not stop in any event or even spend time resting during the transitions. Event comments: Strengths of the Race 1. pups tri was great!! thanks for the tshirts for each of the kids and for the flexibility to let my 13 year old participate. great way to encourage a healthy lifestyle for me and my family. thank you!! 2. large helpful staff 3. course marked out well 4. well organinized despite the poor weather Areas to Improve. 1. give more info regarding the swim timing before the race (in online race description) so that participants can figure out when it would be best for them to swim. i am slow participant and could have swam with the first group so that folks didn't have to wait so long for me to finish at the end of the tri. 2. find a better road route that isn't so beat up with potholes. 3. give split times and finish ranks in overall, gender, age group. 4. consider the athena/clydsdale division for women over 160 lbs and men over 200 lbs if you have enough participants. HegDaBlu Tribe family adventure. Stayed the night in a cabin at Ft. Sisseton State Park with Kenyon, Kaleb, and Dawson (Dylan had plans for May Day with the kids from the Free School), about 4 hours north of Vermillion and 1.5 hours east of Sisseton. It was incredibly windy on Saturday night and overcast. It was interesting to see the northeastern part of SD. Lots of water, it looked like the water was higher than normal, but lots of ponds and lakes with many water fowl to be seen. Kenyon snapped a lot of photos with he and Kaleb's little digital camera. Mar let us use her van to make the trip. Had 4 bikes on the flat rack plugged into the receiver hitch. The kids got to participate in the "Pups Tri" after I finished the Wolves Tri. They swam one 25 yrd length, biked two laps around the rec center parking lot and then ran a couple of hundred yards. Kenyon's time was 5:47, Daw's 6:12, and Kaleb's 6:55. Kaleb rode my tri-bike.
We were a little behind schedule and arrived at NSU at about 9:15 with a start time of 10. The tri was low key with no split times and no timing ankletchips. It was relatively small with mostly local folks including a lot of college students. No chubby folks and not many older or elderly folks. It was a terribly overcast day with strong winds of maybe 30 mph. It rained 3 different times while i was racing, twice during the bike and once during the run. I forgot to start my stopwatch during the swim, so started it at the beginning of T1. Kept my bike time on my speedometer. i crashed with 3 miles remaining. while i was getting my water bottle, i slightly strayed off the edge of the road and hit the soft dirt. i immediately went down and was sprawled out on the country road that had the pink gravel chips on it. my foot came out of my right sandal cleat that stayed hooked to the pedal. i had a massive cramp in my left calf and had to stay sprawled out face down on the road until i was able to work the cramp out. it took me a minute or two. finally, i was able to work the cramp out and pull myself off of the road, get my cleat detatched from the bike and back on my foot. the wreck probably cost me 2 or 3 minutes of time that won't show up on my bike speedometer and i'll have figure in as i estimate my splits.
