Pre-race routine:

Premise - I was not prepared for this race - no excuse just a fact and I only have myself to blame.

Got up at 3:45 had some cereal and coffee and jumped in the car. Set up and caught the last bus over to the pier. Great ride out to the island. Talk to a bunch of great people and really had an enjoyable time on the ferry. This is just a great race.
Event warmup:

None. Not really an option for this race given the logistics.
Swim
  • 34h 39m
  • 2640 yards
  • 1h 18m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Conditions could not have been better however my lack of preparation made this one of the worst swims I have ever had.
What would you do differently?:

Bottom line (and no excuse) not being in the water for 7 months killed me.(surprise-surprise) First 1000 felt good and I thought I would be pleasantly surprised ..boy was I wrong. I could not wait for it to be over. Time to stop procrastinating.
Transition 1
  • 09m 49s
Comments:

I left shoes at the swim out for the first time. BIG mistake. should have just run bare foot as I have in past years. To much time looking for shoes and getting them on. Ran with wetsuit on anyways. Balance of transition was smooth. I did put socks on and was glad I did as the run was sandy.
What would you do differently?:

Run with wetsuit on and bare feet. Don't waste time at the swim out. Turned out that they lost my swim out bag so a double whammy - but good excuse for new goggles, squid lid and ear plugs!
Bike
  • 1h 13m 13s
  • 18 miles
  • 14.75 mile/hr
Comments:

I had high hopes for the bike. I have been spinning 5 days a week for the last 2 months averaging around 20 miles per session however this appears not to have translated to well.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get a bike and cleat fit. I think my cleats are to far forward. I just could not climb. Started having lower back pain around mile 15 however it was not an issue on the run so I am thinking it is a fit issue. . That said I felt pretty good and felt conformable with my bike handling skills. The slow speed was a bit of a surprise..very disappointing.
Transition 2
  • 03m 16s
Comments:

Uneventful.
What would you do differently?:

Need to move faster.
Run
  • 1h 35m 15s
  • 8 miles
  • 11m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought this was going to be awful and it was well on its way to being just that until I ran into an old friend at mile 2. We paced each other for the entire run (thanks you Patrick) and I could not have made it without him. Although 12 minute miles are slow, for me this was a pretty good showing..as I hate running. I was pleased with it and it was the only real positives of the day
What would you do differently?:

Well keeping with the recurring theme for this report ...I need to get back on a running program. I had not been running for over 3 months..not a step..which is a shame as I was starting to enjoy it. Running is my nemesis. I need to get over this.
Post race
Warm down:

Muscle Milk, some food (chicken Salad) walked around a little. Waited for my boat bag and my swim bag..the swim bag didn't make it. Cleaned up my transition area and walked back to the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This is easy - lack of ANY preparation. Had there been a refund process I would have probably not done this race. I only have my self to blame (this is the reason I joined BT. I need inspiration and some kind of accountability) No swimming for 7 months, no running for 4 months and only one 40 mile ride on a real bike this season..I had no illusions that I was in a lot of trouble. I have 2 months until my next event and this was a good "kick in the pants"

Event comments:

This is a GREAT race and a great experience. Every time I do it I realize how lucky I am to have such a beautiful city in my backyard.

Course: This is a great course but you had better love to climb! All that climbing means lots of fast technical downhills so you need to be on your toes at all times. Roads in the park were wonderful this year (a nice change) and there were only a couple of places were the road condition was a factor.

Course: A beautiful course (this seems to be a recurring theme). Basic 2 miles of flat out and then a stead climb for 2 miles, a run in the sand, 400 sand stairs, a run down hill and 2 more miles of flat. The views on Sunday were great especially from Baker Beach bask towards the bridge.
