Swim
What would you do differently?: Longer training - so I don't feel so tired and fresher for the Bike Transition 1
Comments: It was fine - needed the time to get my head straight before the bike. Bike
Comments: too much fooling around with drinking and eating - got a little full and wasted my own hydration. Had to switch to Course stuff - Power Bar Perform. It made my stomach upset. What would you do differently?: get a good 10 miles in feeling strong and then start with the liquid and ease into the food by mile 20. Transition 2
Run
Comments: HOT with hills. Just held on. Cramps in stomach and legs. Had to stop at each aid station to abate. What would you do differently?: more salt tabs on the bike and in early run. stick to my own hydration. Post race
Event comments: I learned a lot. I held back a bit on the bike in the beginning (hydrating and screwing around with food – should have just dropped the hammer. Then I had some problems with grabbing nutrition and stuff when I needed it later. I dropped my Electrolytes around mile 20, managed to get two in – but I had them in a bag with my jelly beans and hit a bump and they all went flying – I actually laughed when it happened. I had just passed a girl on the hills and she yelled up “no, it’s ok I have my own jelly beans, but thanks!” Right about mile 25 I was starting to kick it in and move. Then I started to drink the Perform stuff and I started to get this stomach cramp. Anyway, I didn’t realize what It was and kept taking the stuff at the next station. By the time I got to Providence I had cramping in my stomach and my quads and I had to pee. I stopped with the Perform stuff and switched to water. Second loop I felt better and picked up the pace. Next race, I will have an Aero Helmet and maybe rent some nice wheels, get some kind of salt stick and plan my own hydration better. Last updated: 2010-05-04 12:00 AM
