Pre-race routine:

Camped at Cedar Creek Campsite near Tom's River the night before. I thoroughly recommend it for anyone doing the race. Ok let's be honest, spending the night in a cabin with AC/fan/lights/fridge and running water ain't exactly camping! We enjoyed nice steak and pasta dinner round the campfire with Liz and Chloe and got to bed round 10PM. L and C were offered the option of sleeping in on Sunday but they both voted to get up and go to the race which was awesome. We got up at 4:30 AM, had some pasta, Clif bar and sports drink. Liz organized a cup of strong coffee for both of us and off we drove to the race.
Event warmup:

Arrived at 5:30 AM and got primo parking near gazebo between transition and swim start. Numbered and racked and headed to beach for a swim with lots of time to spare. I took a few minutes to look around me at 6:30 AM and contemplate ~250 people about to swim, bike and run while most of the town folk were still in bed. I guess triathletes are a pretty unusual bunch!
Swim
  • 10m 15s
  • 531 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

In water start with the usual thrashing at the start, which I stayed clear of. I did a nice swim at my usual pace. Thing is my usual pace puts me 2 mins behind a decent MOP swim pace :). However I can take a lot of positives from my swim progress this year. I had no pre swim or pre race anxiety at all. I swam pretty smoothly, breathing and sighting were great, no collisions, good clean exit into T1. Saw Liz and Chloe as I ran thru the chute, always a great feeling.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Did not get a chance to draft as I'd wanted, and I think I lost some time taking my wetsuit off too early in the water. A little patience methinks!
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

T1 was fine, out of the wetsuit and on to bike in 1 min 18 is pretty solid. I think I can get it under a minute though. That's my next goal for T1. With the ease of getting out of the 2 piece DeSoto SpeedTube and SpeedVest I think under 1 minute in a small race with a nice small transition area is a reasonable and achievable goal.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, just go faster!
Bike

Comments:

All I can say is I really, really enjoyed this ride. I felt strong and passed quite a few folks on the way round the course. Of course considering it was 3 loops this made passing more frequent. I managed not to get out of breath too early on, downed some fluid on the bike in anticipation of hear on the run and overall I put in a solid effort. I even had the time to yell a few words of encouragement to Andy and Will from GC Tri as they zipped past me in chase of podium spots.
What would you do differently?:

Average 22 MPH :). Put on the race wheels maybe? Just got to keep working on getting faster and do more TT efforts when training.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Ran by my rack and lost about 15 seconds. Meh! Funny thing is I counted the racks I had to pass to get to mine twice before the race (6) but in the heat of the race.....! Got my helmet & glasses off and shoes on reasonbly quickly. Stopped to give Liz and Chloe a quick kiss (hey..it's Fathers Day after all) then off on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Go straight to my rack? In a small transition like this I'd expect to take 40-45 seconds. Next time!
Run
  • 30m 21s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

My best run in a triathlon since '07. I guess it helps when you're off the bike after just ~22K on the bike! In fairness I came into this run on the back of a decent run in the JP Morgan CC the previous Thursday (averaged 7:20's over 3.5 miles) so I was happy to keep that going and run 7:35's over 4 miles. I passed about 12 people and felt very strong. The only thing that interfered with me was a strong smell of delicious bacon after about 2.8 miles that nearly had me change course and start running in that direction. Mmmm...bacon! I upped the pace a bit in the last .5 mile and passed another couple of folks including one who had exactly the same Tri suit as me...I like his style!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Very happy with this run in the heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Boy I really enjoyed the cold wet towel at the finish line! I hung out with the GC Tri folks and was delighted to meet BT'ers Jackie & her husband Richard & John (Millman) after the race and chat for a bit. Drank lots of water, had banana and bagel and was very happy to be back with Liz and Chloe and hang out with them.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much, I'm very happy with how I did in the race and that I enjoyed the course so much. So happy that I signed up for Asbury Park on August 7th!

Event comments:

This race was very well organized, great location and had some very strong athletes taking part & many first timers. Kudo's to Chris Wilcox for creating a real nice vibe around the race and Father's Day. It was a lot of fun and a perfect start to Father's Day for me. The numbers show I finished in the top 20% of race and 6th in my age group, which is pretty darn good for me. More importantly on this day I'm very lucky that my fiancee Liz and daughter Chloe are such troopers and hung with me from 4:30 AM to the finish and helped me to enjoy the day. I'm blessed to have them both in my life.
