Swim
Comments: Overall pleased with Swim. Scored my first #1 ranking for swim in my age division. Breathing was horrible and I don't know why as I was pretty relaxed. Didn't kick until end to get thru some crowding at last marker. Unfortunately made hard contact with a female swimmer who I came up on quickly and she was paddling on her back:( Didn't mean too! What would you do differently?: Recognize and respond to improper breathing. I was breathing each stroke and I should have just relaxed more and focused on 1,3,5,1,3,5 rythm. Transition 1
Comments: I thought the timing chip was the biggest one I've ever worn! Took off from outside of wetsuit and had to put back on after wetsuit came off. Spent WAAAAAAY too much time trying to get my biking gloves on while jogging bike to bike out line. Shoes went on ok but still not smooth. Struggled with socks a little too What would you do differently?: Ditched the gloves after intial attempt didn't go well. Maybe try no socks and bike shoes already clipped in? Bike
Comments: Not a good sign when my left leg started cramping at about the 3 mile mark. About every 5 minutes I had to coast and really stretch out my left calf full extended. Biking is definately area I need to improve strength and endurance in. What would you do differently?: consume a little more water before race. Maybe kicked more during swim to loosen up legs prior to getting on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Ok, this is a pet peeve on mine - transition area etiquette! Got back to my spot and the person next to me had completely made a disaster area of not only my spot but for the person on the other side as well. I mean everything was everwhere LOL. I actually verbalized "really??" when I saw it!LOL. Got all my gear re-arranged in short order and took off. Not too bad considering. What would you do differently?: Don't mess with the IPOD! Too many wasted seconds fiddling with the cord. Run
Comments: Fist mile was a little sluggish. Picked up pace nicely after the first water station. Took another GU at about 45 min mark from start of race. What would you do differently?: Mentally pushed harder when seeing my HR lower than normal for a run Post race
Warm down: Alot of stretching and enjoying the warmth of the SUNSHINE! Bagel and healthy amount of gatorade/water combo. Place wetsuit, socks and top into sun on pavement to dryout. Relaxed and enjoyed the cheers coming from the finish line for the other triahletes! What limited your ability to perform faster: Cramp on the bike - but no excuses! Event comments: This was my first HAWK-I tri. Great start to my TRI season and was happy with my performance. Gave me some great insight on where to focus my next few weeks training for the bulk of the tri season. Also affirms for me that I need to practice transition area so I can improve instead of winging it on race day. Last updated: 2010-05-04 12:00 AM

Got up at 4:30am for drive from Grand Rapids to Lansing. Had all gear ready and packed and bike on rack night before. 24 oz ice cold Dt. Mountain Dew for ride in car. Ate whole grain bagel w/ alot of peanut butter exactly 2hrs before race start time enroute. Got to transition area and set up bike (fast gear), helmet on aero bars, glasses inside helmet.
Consumed big power aide during 45 min lead up to start with a GU at 15 minute prior start. Ran about 1/2 mile before heading down to beach. Got in water and swam 2 laps around markers to loosen up. Stretched while waiting for wave to go.
