Swim
Comments: Wow this was bad. I was way to concerned with not getting beat up. I found the water choppy, but I am guessing that was because I was struggling. The 1st half of the race I was basically treading water. I had no stroke and I was sighting so much I might as well have been swimming tarzan. About half way I felt that I started to smooth it out and started swimming better. After turning the last tuen bouy(triangle shape) I headed for home. I get about 100 yds from shore and a paddler tell me I have to go around another turn. I say that it is a sight buoy and not a turn buoy and they say I have to go around it. So I literally have to turn around and swim about 100yds diagnolly backwards to round the turn and then head for home. This too, I am guessing about a good 1:30 and also added some distance. Regardless the swim performance was terrible. Hell I can do repeat 100's in the pool in 1:30 range with 20sec rest, but out in the lake I need water wings. Man I lost 8min in the swim to the guy who ended up 8sec ahead of me at the end. What would you do differently?: I should look at the yearly calendar and find some duathlons Transition 1
Comments: Transition is a little slow. I was a little bummed by the swim so I did not have a great sense of urgency What would you do differently?: stay focused and get over the swim. It is over. Bike
Comments: I had a power number I wanted to hit (93% of FTP) but I di dnot look at my meter and went on feel. I was feeling pretty good and I thought I was going solid. I decided to keep at it on the bike and not worry about what I might have left for the run. The last 10mi we ran into a pretty solid wind and suddenly I was thinking the run was going to be tough. I also slowed over the last 10mi because of the wind and the fact that I seemed to be between gears. I was iether spinning a little more than I wanted or I was having to grind a little too much. My numbers in retrospect are a little dissapointing (ended at 88% of FTP. But that is an FTP figured out 2 days b4 race). I am happy with the time and position on bike and the fact that I rode solid based off of RPE and was not a slave to a number. What would you do differently?: Maybe actually pay a little more attention to my powermeter to make sure I am in the window I believe I should be able to hold. Transition 2
Run
Comments: It was crazy hot(93) and humid like a sauna for the run. I decided to take it easy for the 1st 2 mile and then try to strtch it out a little. Ran pretty consistant, but never went super deep at any point. As I rounded the last corner, about 200yds from finish, I saw a guy in my AG. I was running quicker than him so figured he would not respond as I went by. He did try to come with me but I had another 2 gears if needed and he fell off after a few seconds. What would you do differently?: not much. I need to race a little more even if I do not see people in front of me. I ended 8 sec behind 8th OA and I think I could have quite easily have found that on the race course. Post race
Warm down: nothing What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim Event comments: They had sandwiches and fruit after the race which was nice. I waited for the prize giving, but wow 2hrs in the blazing sun to get a a little lunch cooler thngy was not worth that. Oh well it was my 1st race in 40-44 and so i figured I would go to the awards.
