Swim
Comments: Started on the shore on the right side edge of the pack. I positioned myself near the front to be able to get a good position in the water. Once started I noticed some people going slower than me from the beginning and had to navigate around them. It wasn't too bad at all and found my space relatively quickly. I rounded the 1st bouy (to my left) but was probably a little bit farther out from it than I desired (about 20 feet). I decided not to let that happen for bouy #2. I followed feet as much as I could to the next bouy and sighted occassionally to make sure I was on course. Bouy #2 was perfectly rounded. I practically touched it with my shoulder. Headed for the shore. I followed a guy who was just to my right in front of me. I relied on him knowing where he was going, but sighted occassionally just in case. I really poured it on and kicked in the final 50 yds or so. Got to shore and sprinted to my bike. Notes: my goggles did not fog up. I had used the defogger applied the night before and spit just before putting them on. This seemms to work for me. What would you do differently?: Started in 3rd wave this time, but I think I am capable of starting in the first wave with the more experienced group. I noticed a lot of new swimmers doing breast stroke and other types of swimming styles in the 3rd wave. Transition 1
Comments: 1st time to use the technique of starting with shoes already on the bike. Worked out great. I got up and out of the park and onto the street before slipping into my shoes. My top left strap came out of the loop so I ended up riding the whole course with that strap flapping and loose, but it didn't hinder me too much. Would have preferred to have it strapped tight. What would you do differently?: Remember to reset the cateye on the bike to correctly gather stats. I didn't do this for this race so don't have accurate avg speed. Remember to check the gear on the bike. I got very lucky that it was set to the perfect gear for getting up the hill and out on the course. Practice getting into shoes barefoot more on the bike to avoid the little issue with the flapping strap. Bike
Comments: 11 miles felt very short given some of the longer rides I've been on. It felt great to pass so many on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: After hopping off the bike barefoot, my left leg buckled a little bit and I fell down, not hard, but still lost some time getting back up and running over to my transition area. I racked the bike, took off helmet, grabbed garmin, slipped on shoes quickly with no hitches. What would you do differently?: Make sure my leg is ready to support my weight before fully committing to getting off the bike. Run
Comments: At beginning, I wanted to get my cadence up quickly. I turned on the garmin and strapped it on while running. Once on, I focused on moving as quickly as I felt I could for the 5k. Looking at my garmin, I found my pace was better than planned and I felt that I could maintain that pace. I planned for 9min/mi and ran closer to 8min/mi. I continued to push through the end and surprised myself with my overall performance. During water areas, poured some on my head and tried to drink some. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, ate cantelope, drank electrolyte, chatted with friends. What limited your ability to perform faster: Just training. Event comments: I don't have actual times for my segments as this was just a "fun" triathlon with only a timer at the end. I do know that I was running pretty good paces for my run splits. (8:21, 8:07, 8:06, 8:05) I also know that I was usually around 19 or 20 miles per hour on the bike. And my swim went without a hitch. I felt fast and didn't have any difficulties. My prediction was 1 hour and 13 minutes, but exceeded this with 1hr 4min. I'm very happy with my performance. Last updated: 2010-05-05 12:00 AM

Got up at 4am. Egg whites, cantelope, water, and small cup of coffee for breakfast. Left at 4:30 and arrived at 5:30 at venue. Was early and got my pick of spaces at the transition area. Did not eat or drink anything until just before the start. No problems with stomach at all.
It really helped to swim a couple hundred yds before the start. I felt nice and warmed up. The water temp was awesome... no wetsuit required at all.
