Swim
Comments: This hurt me as it was my second open water swim (first was at Rocketts Tri earlier in the summer). I was way off course constantly. I also had a terrible calve cramp on my way upstream. It took me what seemed to be ten minutes of trying not to drown in stretching. This time was spent drifting back down the course. I never got the cramp out and ended up swimming down one leg. I also missed the turn into the beach and ended up near the ferry dock. Not a good swim for me. BUT. it was reassuring knowing that I didn't give up and saw many others taken out on a jet ski. What would you do differently?: More open water practice. Get my stretching routine down! Transition 1
Comments: Long Long run to the transition. Helped me to catch my cool after a terrible swim. Bike
Comments: Good ride considering my pour nutrition, I hit a wall around mile 40. This was due to pour nutrition (I ate what different from my training). I forgot a chewy bar, so I only had one, and forgot a banana. I ended up eating only two power-gels, one chewy bar, and a small bag of peanut M&Ms. I also used orange Gatorade, when I have used red in all my training. I don't know what caused it, but I threw up around mile 35 What would you do differently?: Work more on nutrition, I think this was the second demise of my race. My time was not that bad though. I need more long rides in aero. My back and neck began to hurt during the end of the bike ride. Transition 2
Comments: Best rank of the race. Riddle me that. Run
Comments: I had a great pace for the first 3 miles. Then my kidneys began to hurt and I could only take shallow breaths. I tried to eat oranges and drink water at ever stop. I started walking a bit at mile 4. At mile 7 my toes and feet began to cramp. I walked/jogged for a mile then stopped and took my shoes off. I stretched my toes and then was able to job slowly. My feet no longer hurt, but I still couldn't breath deeply because of my kidneys. What would you do differently?: Bad nutrition on the bike killed my run. Also had a problem with my toes, maybe need different shoes next time. Post race
Warm down: Felt like death at the end, but almost cried. Got hugs and kisses from my wife and dog, Zula. Couldn't really eat, but we sat in the shade. The beer truck was a temptation before the race and motivated me a bit to finish, but I was unable to drink beer all day. What limited your ability to perform faster: If anything I can set an example of what not to do in a HIM, not only for myself for others. This was my first season of Triathlons, but I felt prepared physically, but my nutrition was not there. Event comments: I would definitely do this race again, maybe next year. The volunteers were great and the course awesome! I don't have much to compare this to, but it was great for me! Last updated: 2010-05-06 12:00 AM
