Swim
Comments: As I was waiting for the start I remembered the only reason why I signed up for this race was just to have a preview of IMFL for this November. So my attitude going in was just to do everything at a comfortable pace. So as my wave took off I slowly went in with no rushing at all. The waves and chop was bad. But IMNO 70.3 chop 3 weeks ago was a lot worse. Of coarse the chop slowed me down from a better time but it seemed to be more of a sighting issue and it was hard to get in a good rythm. Kicking really hurt so I didnt kick through the whole swim. Im not sure the current was much of an issue because time going out and time going in was about the same. Going out I tried my best to do some drafting which was okay but it was hard to follow people in such a chop. I had to stop a couple of times to look around to find bouys. Made the turn left and then again and started to head back to shore. At this time I checked my watch and it said 21:00. I was swimming at a comfotable pace and my breating was good. I could have went out harder but I was trying to swim a pace that I would swim at IMFL. for some reason I was way right of the bouys but no point of trying to swim back to them because the shore was my destination anyway. So the shore is what I used for my sighting. Tword the end of the swim I almost felt like I could do another lap which was what I was going for. In better conditions time would have been a lot better. What would you do differently?: Kick with a healthy ankle Transition 1
Comments: Exited the water and limped up the beach. Running throught transition was not even an option. I got under the fresh water rinse and decided to sit down on the bench to get my wetsuit off. Yanking it from my feet would have been pretty painful. I got it off and hobbled through transition. A volunteer was right next to my stuff cheering and she was cheering over me the whole time when I was in slow motion. I think I even heard her say "hurry up, you are goin to win this!"....... I just thought bless her heart. She has no clue what she is talking about. I strapped on the ankle brace to my left ankle which I had to go on my right ankle. Grabbed my bike and sluggishly walked to bike start. What would you do differently?: Run through transition Bike
Comments: Before IMNO I got the new bike and I didnt have time to get it fitted. When I did get it fitted Todd raised my seat about 1.5 inches higher and Todd from the shop said I was losing a lot of power with that set up. So I was anxious to see how this one was going to do. My ankle wasnt feeling affected by cycling. Took about 10 miles to get my legs under me. Headwind was bad going west until we went started going north. I came up on the hill and I felt I attacked it pretty good. Off the hill I turned east and hit a road that was super smooth. Both ways on this road wind didnt really seem to be a factor. I think the trees were blocking most of the wind. Turned back around and attacked the hill again. Off the hill a headwind was back until turned back to front beach road and headed east into a strong tailwind. At this point my ankle wasnt feeling that bad and I was considering doing the run. As I was exiting the bike I was 7 minutes faster at this point then I was at New Orleans race. This made me decide that I was going to attempt to do the run. Drank 2 gu electrolyte drinks and 2 gatoraides. Ate a banana and 3 gus. Transition 2
Comments: Got off the bike and I just threw on the shoes no socks, no fuelbelt, I just took off with a tightened ankle brace. I felt decent but adrenaline was running through me. Run
Comments: Started out okay until about a half a mile. Pain started to set in and I was kind of limp running. I shook it off and tried my best to keep going. Mile 1 ticked off pretty quick. At mile 2 I had to stop and readjust my ankle brace tighter. The heat was pretty bad and I felt a little dehytrated too and my nutrition was not all that great. Half way through mile 2 I decided that I couldnt go on. I decided to finish up to mile 3 and I was going to call it. I was just in too much pain. At mile 3 I still would have to run another 10 miles and there was just no way this was going to be possible. I told the volunteers at mile 3 aide station I was done and to see if someone could pick me up and bring me back. I sat down and took off my brace and iced my foot waiting. At this point it was supper swollen and once the swelling really took place the pain got real bad and I had no range of motion and was not able to put any weight on it. Went right to medical tent and got more ice and wrapped it. Mile 1 8:37 170bpm mile 2 9:22 173bpm mile 3 10:31 172bpm What would you do differently?: Not run at all Post race
Warm down: Went to medical tent and everyone was surprised that I even participated in the race with how my ankle looked. Offered to bring me to hospital in ambulance but there was no way I was leaving my bike and all my other stuff. So I waited until transition opened and got golf carted to my stuff and drove myself to the ER. Got xrayed. Xrayed turned out ok which I was happy about. But it turned out that I tore a ligament. What limited your ability to perform faster: Tore Ligament in ankle. Event comments: Ill try this one again next year. Last updated: 2010-05-10 12:00 AM

Sooooooo... Let me paint a picture. Alarm clock goes off at 4:30. I get out of bed in the pitch dark to get up and look for the light switch and then step on my sandal and heard a crack as it rolled laterally. I immediatly was on the ground in a half a second and stayed there for 10 minutes rocking in pain. First thought that went through my mind was there goes the race. I got up and hopped over to the light switch and just sat on the bed in disbelief. I only decided to do this race 2 days earlier as a last minute deal so this was not really a priority race. I wasnt even sure I was going to do the run leg anyway because Ive been having some bad ankle issues to my right ankle to where ive been wearing a brace and havent really been running.
But I traveled all this way and payed all this money I decided that Ill make it to the race and make a final decision about what I was going to do right before the race. I ate a cliff bar, banana, and drank an Ensure with 6 units of Novolog. Slowly packed up my things and headed out the door with a limp.
At this point I could feel the pain but swelling never really settled in yet. I was able to put pressure on it but a certain areas of my range of motion it would really hurt.
I asked for medical tape from some medical but they said they didnt have anything. They didnt even have bandaids. It was pretty rediculous that medical was even at this race becasue they couldnt offer any help because of liability.
So decided to do the swim and maybe the bike depending on how the swim went.
Spend 20 minutes looking for some medical tape to stabilize my ankle for the swim because kicking was not going to be fun.
