Swim
Comments: Easy swim. Stayed in Zone 1. SLower than last year, but last year I was anaerobic at the end. Passed one person, got passed by no one. What would you do differently?: Train and therefore race harder. C'est la vie. Transition 1
Comments: OK T1. A little hard getting top on, but very smooth otherwise. Lots faster than last year. What would you do differently?: Not much. If it was warmer, I would have raced without the top and saved 10 seconds. Bike
Comments: Good bike, stayed in Zone 2. Very easy...this'll be a IM effort. I'm really pleased that I could ride at that pace at that effort, considering my lack of training. If you take out the dismount and run, I would have been right at 21mph, which isn't bad over a technical course. Go me! What would you do differently?: Train, I guess. Transition 2
Comments: Had some trouble getting my shoes on without the tongue getting bucnched up. Cost me about 20 seconds. What would you do differently?: Not have shoes so tight. Run
Comments: Great run, considering the effort. A year ago, to run 7:30 miles even if I were well-trained would have had me redlining. But this run felt like a nice little controlled effort that I could have held all day. I never felt stressed and was able to accelerate in the second half very easily, but still keep my HR in check. What would you do differently?: You know... Post race
Warm down: Ran easy about a mile. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training, self-imposed HR limits. I gotta say, there's apparently something to be said for a 4 month taper. Even at this very easy effort and with the bike dismount that wasn't there last year I was 2:11 faster. Event comments: This race rocks! The location, on Parris Island, is awesome. Very senic and racing by the recruits in basic is awesome. Plus, factor in hanging out with a bunch of BT and TNT friends in a nice, laid-back atmosphere and you've got a winner. Shoutouts: Russ is the man. Shannon is a true sweetheart (thanks (I think) for the Barry). And to my TNT athletes: you guys rocked! Marti (smarti) improved 10 minutes over a similar race last year and had a blast. She's still my hero. Janelle overcame a potentially disastrous lack of a bike shoe to not only finish the race but also to improve on last year by 2 minutes. Sandee and Lynn were 2nd and 3rd in their age group. And Jason was third in his, in his very first tri! Last updated: 2006-01-09 12:00 AM

Got into Port Royal about 4pm on Friday and went right to PI to register. Was greeted by gullahcracker's "Welcome BTers/TNTers" sign at the Days Inn. It's really cool travelling to races where you know people. We felt like celebrities! Hung out at the hotel a bit and then went to dinner with Russ (Cracker), Shannon (southernaquagoddess), Marti (smarti) and Janelle (runnergirl), along with a bunch of TNTers. We had about 18 total at one big table at dinner. Good times.
Woke up at 5, showered, aired up tires of my TNTers and my own bike and loaded them onto Sandee's truck. Ate 2 pacets of instant oatmeal and half of a bagel, drank 16oz of PowerBar Endurance and a 20oz Diet Coke. Drove to PI, set up transition, got body marked and my chip.
In between all that and warnming up, hung out with my TNT folks and laughed a little (ok...a lot) because Janelle forgot one of her bike shoes and would end up riding with one bike show and one running shoe (always check your gear before you leave for the race).
Rode 8 miles of the course (cold and windy) and ran two miles to warm up. Got in the pool (much cooler than last year's 95 degrees) and swam about 800 meters.
My gowal for this race was top 5 AG and 1:05. Revised that due to extreme lack of training (I've been on a 4 month taper since MIami Man in November). Not all bad, cause IMFL training will be starting before I know it, so no sense getting crazy to soon and getting burned out. Plus, it's so hard training during TNT season, especially this year cause I'm coaching three teams. Revised goal: Zone 1 for swim, Zone 2 for bike, Zone 3 for run. I wanted to be able to train Sunday, and if I went hard, I'd be too sore. So this would be an easy day.
