Swim
Comments: This was my first swim at the Jay Benson where I didn't feel like my swim time was affected by congestion in the pool. I was able to pass freely and turn at the walls with no problem. I had an "all out" sprint to the finish against another swimmer for the last 50m - was able to beat him out - Whoo Hoo! What would you do differently?: Nothing Transition 1
Comments: This was a reverse tri. So, T1 was a run to bike transition. I'm not sure what is using up the time here... everything went as planned. I am wearing lace-up MTB shoes on my bike.. that's the only thing I can think of. What would you do differently?: Not much, a quicker shoe style would help - but, there are other places (bike leg time) where more significant amounts of time can be trimmed off. Bike
Comments: My lack of training focus on the bike showed here. I stuck to my HR / cadence plan - but, the speed just wasn't there (was hoping for around 22 mph average). I could feel my legs weakening about half way and simply couldn't maintain good speed in the rollers. Also, I dropped my water bottle twice - once early (stopped to pick it up as this was my only supply of fluid) and once late (did not stop for it). FYI - I did try (with no luck) to find my water bottle after the race. I don't want the hosting venue to kick us out for trashing the place. What would you do differently?: Train more on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: This was a reverse tri - so, T2 was a bike to swim transition. I encountered a few glitches on this one. I forgot to remove my sunglasses, so I had to run back to my area to drop them off. Luckily I wasn't too far away from my transition area when I realized my mistake. I also missed the exit to the swim. In prior years, the swim exit was at the end of the transition area - this year, it was in the middle. Thanks to my wife for yelling at me to turn around! What would you do differently?: Remember everything I need to do to complete the transition and check out the exit point prior to the race. Run
Comments: This was my biggest improvement over last year - I cut more than 2 minutes out of my run time! I stuck to my HR plan and beat my pace goal. Intervals really do work! They suck - but, they work... What would you do differently?: Nothing - it was a good run for me. Post race
Warm down: Not much... walked around, drank some water, ate some bananas, and chatted with fellow competitors. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training for the bike. Event comments: It was well organized event with plenty of volunteers. I think my only complaint would be with the timing - results were slow to post, there seems to be many glitches in the data, and my friend's race data is completely absent (big bummer). I'll be back next year! Last updated: 2010-05-11 12:00 AM

I woke up about 5:30 am, showered, ate a bagel with peanut butter and cream cheese and washed it down with some water and a protein shake. I left the house for the race about 6:30 am.
One lap around the track (1/4 mi ?) followed by some stretching just before race start.
