Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5AM which was nice to sleep in some before a race. Ate half a bagel with peanut butter and honey. No coffee this time though. Just water.
Event warmup:

Got in the ice cold water so I could get used to it. Swam a little but not much. I didn't want to deal with the strong current.
Swim
  • 07m 15s
  • 275 meters
  • 02m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pretty good swim for me. Goal was to be under 3:00/100. Water was freezing so my swim consisted mostly of freestyle but with my head out of the water. No breast stroking this time which is a huge improvement for me! Current was with us going out and against us going back. Actually walked some on the back half because it was so shallow.
What would you do differently?:

Not worry about hitting people. Just swim!
Transition 1
  • 01m 4s
Comments:

I actually thought this would be much worse. Wetsuit strippers had trouble getting it off my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Probably nothing. It was the first time I've worn a wetsuit in a race so I don't know if I would have been any quicker.
Bike
  • 46m 54s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 17.27 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike was harder than I anticipated. My speed range went from 5mph to 33mph. Hilly, hilly course! Used all my gears. Some of the crosswinds made me feel like I might topple over! One of the worst things about the course was going on a sweet downhill then having to put on the brakes for a sharp 90 degree turn! Also dropped my water bottle but fortunately it was on mile 11.5.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Not many hills to train on in Houston.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Only problem I had here was fitting my bike back on the rack. Someone had taken my spot so unfortunately for them, their bike got knocked to the ground. Oops!
Run
  • 30m 20s
  • 3.3 miles
  • 09m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pretty satisfied with my run. No clue really what my pace was while running. The worst part was the uphill right out of transition. It was no small feat! Wish they had more than one water station as well but thankfully I drank most of my water on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around some with Eric. Got some water and food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

myself :) This race was really just for fun. I knew going in I wouldn't be well trained due to wedding/honeymoon so I was pretty darn pleased with a top 5 placement!

Event comments:

Pretty well organized race considering this is only their second year. Definitely the hardest sprint course I have ever done!
