Swim
Comments: I forgot to start my watch when the wave started, so I had no idea what my time was like. The swim was horrible, though. I haven't swam in a really long time, and it showed. My arms were pretty sore from the beginning--the full sleeve suit didn't help. I don't need a wetsuit in 72F water--need to remember that. Sighting on the first leg was bad--I probably added 50m just by veering off course. I did a little drafting, which was cool. When I got out of the water I was wasted, basically. What would you do differently?: This is going to be a recurring theme - train. Other than that, not wearing the wetsuit would have helped.I'm not happy with how the swim felt, but the time is acceptable. Transition 1
Comments: There was a huge hill to run up to get into the transition area. By the time I made it up the hill, I was exhausted. I started to get a really deep painful stitch in my side, which made it difficult to breathe. When I got to my spot, I hunched over to try to catch my breath. I probably added a good 45s to my time doing this. Got my stuff off fairly quickly, walked my bike to the bikeout, and away I went What would you do differently?: Not much. First transition of the season, combined with really cramped quarters and a brutal side stitch, I think I did okay. Bike
Comments: I know this course was really hilly, and I know I haven't trained, but this result was piss-poor. There was very few competitors behind me, and they all passed me on the bike. Now that I see the results in black and white, I can see why. I was practically standing still. Except for this one really great downhill--made it up to almost 31mph. What would you do differently?: Train. Too though, I think needing to push myself was a key factor. That and the fact that I was never peddling very fast--thus the slow speed. Only thing that will help that, though is time on the bike. Transition 2
Comments: Moved a little slowly here too. Got in, jogged with the bike to my spot. Racked it, bike shoes off, socks and runners on, grab hat and race belt, and go. I walked out of transition, and started running once I was on the course. What would you do differently?: Not much. It was hard to be systematic with the lack of space. Run
Comments: This was the best part of the race for me. I stuck to the plan of 8/2 intervals, and I walked all the uphills. I felt great the whole run. What would you do differently?: I executed exactly the run I wanted to, so other than being better trained, I wouldn't change it Post race
Warm down: Came through the finish to the sounds of my BT friends' cheers. Got a little food--probably not enough--and hung out. What limited your ability to perform faster: I think I answered this one already :) I need to get off my butt, and get in gear! Event comments: Well run race. Would have been nice to see a little more food--post race was watermelon, pizza, pop and cookies, unless all the good stuff was gone before I got there :) Last updated: 2006-01-10 12:00 AM

Woke up, packed the car and left. I ate a CLIF bar and drank a bottle of water on the way in. Got to the race pretty early. Got set-up, and wandered around trying to find Trixie and Rick. Found 'em. Pot-o-pottied. Port-o-pottied again. Stood on the fromering cold ground waiting for my swim wave--the ground was so cold my one foot was starting to cramp up.
Warm-up? I didn't train, so warming up didn't seem like much of an issue.
