Run
Comments: Tried to keep my pace and not focus on other runners. Felt pretty good, was pushing it fairly hard. Ran it about :30 quicker than planned, so I was feeling confident. What would you do differently?: More hills in training. Transition 1
Comments: Already had my arm warmers and gloves on. Pretty smooth transition. Ranked 16/134 What would you do differently?: Practice getting on the bike more. Probably cost me 5 seconds trying to get clipped in. Bike
Comments: 1 mile wasn't much time to adjust before the big hill. I was passing people the whole way up, but was working really hard - especially at the top. Down was fun. Hill road was ok - didn't feel particularly strong. Also wasn't pushing it super hard, hoping to have something left for the run. Still got caught racing other riders a bit - maybe it helped, maybe it hurt, not sure. Felt fairly good at the end. What would you do differently?: More hills in training. Was training for a flat sprint triathlon until it was canceled two weeks before this race, which is why I did this one - so I couldn't do much about that. Transition 2
Comments: Went pretty smooth considering the fatigue. Had to take off my gloves & arm warmers which probably cost me 8 seconds. ranked 33/134 What would you do differently?: Get my arm warmer over my watch while still on the bike. Maybe practice taking off the gloves & arm warmers on the bike. Run
Comments: My legs felt weak & the muscles on my butt bones hurt heading into the run. I expected that, but I also didn't have tons of breath and energy. I hoped that would wear off, but it didn't as much as I'd have liked. I couldn't keep the pace of the first run. Uphill was really tough. At one point I thought, "I don't know if I ever want to do this again." I was so glad to get to the downhill, but still just didn't have the energy I'm used to. Pushing it harder made my chest hurt, so I had to just accept that I was out of gas and pushed as hard as my body would allow. Normally I have a strong kick at the end - could only muster about a 100 yard weak burst. What would you do differently?: I think this mostly came down to not enough time to train specifically for this race. I could have had more for the run if I backed off on the bike, but that wouldn't have changed my time. I could have used Roctane Gu rather than regular - might have given me a bit more energy. Post race
Warm down: Congratulated Ryan for a great race, grabbed some water, grapes, banana, & pizza. Walked around a bit & talked with Ryan & other racers. Felt like junk. Light-headed & wiped out. Felt better after a while. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not training specifically for this race until two weeks out because my sprint tri was canceled. Didn't have the distance or hill training I needed. Underestimated the lack of energy I'd have on the last run. Event comments: This was my first duathlon. Good experience. Great organizers, course, etc. Was especially good to have good volunteers directing traffic. Last updated: 2010-05-15 12:00 AM

Hardly slept :-( Had some applesauce & milk, drove to course. Was one of the first there - got a great transition spot, then relaxed in the car until I could get my timing chip. Connected with Ryan Kuntz.
Ryan & I jogged the youth course ~:10 easy, one short section at race pace. Stretched. Kept layers on to stay warm. Gu 5 min before race start.
