Pre-race routine:

Met J at park and ride. Rode down to event. Ate flat out with PBJ and banana. Bikes already racked. Bathroom stop in a "real" bathroom, but no doors. Chatted with VB's and got all my stuff ready. DH showed up to be team photographer. Thought I had my Garmin to put on the bike, but couldn't find it. Thought I'd left it in the car.
Event warmup:

Swam some, did some high jumps (?) and just tried to relax in the water before the swim. Watched the previous wave go off and cheered for them.
Swim

Comments:

I was so ready for the swim start. Very confidently lined up in the front (never had done that before) and when the horn went off was literally left at the start. Those other women left me in their wake. So I started swimming trying to catch someone to draft off of. Then I started feeling constricted around my neck. WTH? I'd swam in this suit for almost two miles the day before yesterday. I couldn't keep my breathing consistent with my stroke, so I side stroked and saw so many other blue caps passing me. I even thought at one point, I just wanted to find a paddleboard and throw in the towel. Not me at all. I realized this was going to be a very long swim if I didn't get my sh*t together and quickly, so I just kept trying to get my head in the water and breath. Finally after about 200 meters and numerous people passing me, I was able to get going. I rounded the end buoy very well and started passing others now. I came on a very square shaped and thick swimmmer. A large woman? No, a guy, who was in a relay and they started in our wave. My God he was gigantic...I mean just a huge granite of a guy. I bumped him several times by accident and that guy wasn't going anywhere. So I finally got by him and just tried to pick caps off one by one. As it turns out, had I not freaked at the beginning I would have PR'd this swim by over a minute and probably inched up at least one place in the rankings.
What would you do differently?:

Try to not lose my breathing and stroke. Maybe not start in the front row?
Transition 1
  • 04m 22s
Comments:

Not sure why this time is so long. I didn't feel like I was taking this long. It is a very long run up from the water to where they racked us 45-49 year-olds.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure here.

Comments:

This was probably the best bike ride I've had. I caught up with some gals who were in the AG and wave ahead of mine and played cat/mouse with a couple of guys and one girl from LV who ended up winning her Athena division. I enjoyed this ride. Loved my Orbea. She's a good friend. :-)

Transition 2
  • 02m 51s
Comments:

Did the flying dismount for the first time in a race. Woo-hoo. Fun. I did take my foot out of the shoe a bit early though.
What would you do differently?:

Not be lazy thenight before and have my yankz in the running shoes instead of laces. That probably cost me a few seconds -- maybe more than a few.
Run
  • 55m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

without my Garmin, chose to run/ride naked ie: without Garmin, I didn't have anything but my body to tell me how hard I was running. Got passed by some in my AG, but also passed some others. I just took it easy the first half of the run, then tried to kick it up a notch. This one girl (woman) passed me and she was 46, so in my age group. We had about 3/4 of a mile left to go and she was just in front of me by 20 yards or so. I told myself to keep her in my sights and hold on and perhaps I'd have something left closer to the finish and inch up a spot. So, that's what I did. I rounded the last corner and my DH was there and some VB friends who were cheering. That helped and I felt like I was going to throw up, so I knew I was running pretty hard. I rounded the corner and could see I was gaining on her. I thought, Lynn, no guts, no glory, you can try to be one place higher in your AG and at least try to pass her. So, I cranked my legs as fast as they would go and over took her, making up that 20 yards and beating her across the finish line by 2 seconds, for 13th place instead of 14th. It was cool to see I had that in me. That I was able to push a little harder because I almost gave up. Afterwards she told me she knew I was back there and we introduced ourselves and shook hands. I love the comeraderie of triathlon.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank a couple of water bottles, had some cheese off the cheese bagel, oranges and jamba juice samples. Found other VB's and DH to cheer them on. Waited for the awards, which took forever.J, who I had driven down with, won her division so we wanted to wait with her. Plus, DH was driving us back to transition as this was a point to point run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My own mind, as per usual.

Event comments:

Well organized event. I do wish it were a USAT sanctioned event. May not do it next year. Good post race band and food. Didnt' have to take the shuttle this year so didn't have to wait in line like last year. There were several of us VB's racing, which really makes it fun to be able to watch and cheer for each other. Lost my Garmin at this race. Now I need a new one. :-(
