Pre-race routine:

Night prior had my favorite pre-race night before meal, a hobo meal. I also drank 3 Sam Adams.

Woke up at 3:45 a.m. Ate Honey Nut Cheerios and then took a shower. Left town at about 5 a.m. Drank two bottles of Gatorade along the way. Arrived to the race site at about 6:40 a.m. Racked my bike, got my numbers, and went to the outhouse. :) Went back to transition, got my gear ready, and stretched. I went scouting around to see if I could find any other FCA Endurance members or at least a pre race prayer meeting. Couldn't find anyone, so I waited for my wife and children to come from the van.

Pre-race meeting at 7:45 a.m. and then down to the lake like a herd of cattle.
Event warmup:

Light stretching and walking around.
Swim
  • 11m 11s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

First 100 meters there was a lot of contact. I was swimming on top of people and people were swimming on top of me. At one point, my goggles were kicked and they lost their seal. As a result, I had to stop twice to get them resealed.

After the first 100 meters or so, I slowly caught somewhat of a groove. I can honestly say, I didn't come into my own the entire swim. This is evident in my overall rank. Usually, my swimming is much better. I'm disappointed in my performance. This was my worst discipline for the day. I was hoping to be in the 10 minute range.
What would you do differently?:

More consistent in my swim workouts. Thow some intervals in as well. Try not to get kicked in the face. :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

During T1 I fumbled with my number belt. This costed a few seconds. I also couldn't get my shoes to clip into my pedals. As a result, I lost time and couldn't get up to speed.
What would you do differently?:

Either get clipped in better or have my shoes already clipped in. I've been toying with this idea for awhile. Other then these two items, it wasn't a bad transition.
Bike
  • 44m 22s
  • 13.5 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Started the first loop a bit to strong and hard. I did manage to work into a nice groove though. Had a few people pass me, but I passed a whole lot more. Felt good because my bike is usually my weakest link. The course was more technical than what I'm use to. They had to reroute because they couldn't obtain permission from the state to use highway 370. I did have a couple of close calls. I drank a bottle and a half of Gatorade. I also ate one gel on the second lap. Also, I noticed my cadence was running higher than normal. Was running it between 100 and 105. Don't know if this is good or not, but it is what it is. I can honestly say, this has been my best bike to date. Had there been more straight aways, I probably could've smoked it in the higher 18s or lower 19s.
What would you do differently?:

Other than get clipped in better, absolutely nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

Racked the bike quick and transitioned fairly well. Spent a second or two being indecisive about putting on my knee strap or not. Also, spent to much time with the shoes. I'm thinking about getting Easy Laces. These would save quite a bit of time.
What would you do differently?:

Not be indecisive and get Easy Laces.
Run
  • 22m 59s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

First mile sucked, but it usually does on all my runs. After that I caught the groove and just held it to the end. I tried something new and didn't wear my visor. Glad I did. This allowed me to keep a bit cooler. Was a good run. Was passed by 2 people and I passed 4 or 5. Went through 4 aid stations during the run. Only downside, they were only serving water. I got to the point I would take a sip and dump the rest on my head. Was craving Gatorade or Powerade.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good run.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some bagels and a banana, drank Powerade, and talked with my family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim and my T1.

Event comments:

Very good race, especially for the first time triathlete. Only problem, they limit the field to approx. 200 athletes. This race fills up quick. This was my first triathlon 2 years ago. I'm glad I was able to race it again. I did shave 10 minutes from the previous time I did this race. Would like to race it again in a year or two.
