Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00, had coffee, 2 egg whites, 1 piece of toast w/ light butter. Sipped water until 6:30, took a GU 20 mins prior to wave start.
Event warmup:

Swam 5-6 mins easy in the lake. I hate sharp rocks and kelpy seaweed crap that grows in lakes. Skeeves me out!
Swim
  • 18m 14s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

Pretty happy w/ swim results. I still need to work on just swimming longer continuously. I get winded and have to flop on my back after 300m or so. Pretty sure I lost a couple minutes because of that. Water was so murky I couldn't see 2 feet in front of me. Nobody around me to draft off of after about the first 100m and I kept getting turned to the right for some reason. Guess my left pull is weak. I think I'm done w/ the full suit too. Kept feeling like I had something in my throat, or like I couldn't get my breath. Pretty sure it was the suit neck bothering me.
What would you do differently?:

Draft, swim straight, wear bib john suit.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Had a rather long uphill run to the bike rack, suit got stuck on both legs despite me bodygliding the suit from the calves down. HR strap probably cost me an extra 15-20 seconds too, but I'm SOL until I can get a soft strap that can be worn on the swim. I would have been happy w/ 2:00 here given the distance from water to bike.
What would you do differently?:

Might cut off the bottom of the suit legs to make it easier to get out of it. Flying squirrel mount if I could get a damn flat bike mount area.
Bike
  • 38m 90s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 18.88 mile/hr
Comments:

We had a pretty long rather steep incline to start so I put my shoes on in transition and clipped in at the mount line. I thought I crushed the bike leg pretty well, but I still didn't even average 19 mph. I'm still not very strong on the hills, but getting better. Took a turn at 27mph and didn't smear myself across the road. I dig it. My lower back, only on the right side, was really hurting for some reason and only on the bike. Maybe I need to ride more near race day? Looking at my split data, I definitely should have ridden in smaller gears, instead of mashing the bigger gears.
What would you do differently?:

Go slower. Think I went to hard and ruined myself for the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Fastest T2 for my AG. At least I did well at something :D. My wife said she snapped a pic, looked up from the camera and I was gone. I don't fuck around in T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 31m 19s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Run sucked ass. The only thing I can think of, is that I went out too hard on the bike. I wasn't particularly winded, it wasn't too hot, but I felt like I was gonna blow chunks and my HR was in the low 170s. That's above LT and it was all I could do to just keep running and not walk. Got passed by FIVE guys in my AG on the run. I would have made top 10 if I hadn't blown this out my ass.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster? Fuel better? Bike slower? I'm at a loss here. Same phenomenon occurred at a 1/2 marathon I ran 2 weeks ago. I have no idea why.
Post race
Warm down:

Had a couple slices of watermelon and some water. My daughter turned pale and said she felt like she was gonna puke right after I finished so we sat in the pathfinder for 20 minutes or so while she napped.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

If I knew that I would have gone faster now wouldn't I?

Event comments:

Decent race I guess. Expo was lame, t-shirt was lame, finishers medal was sweet and they gave out free coffee mugs. This race has been going on for 15 years or something, but it's too hilly for me. Cut the crap out of my feet and hand on the rocks in the lake during the swim. And doesn't anybody organize FLAT race courses anymore??? I won't be back for this one.
