Overall Rank = 110/184

Age Group Rank = 11/17
Pre-race routine:

Protein bar, coffee, water, salt tab
Event warmup:

Ran to get sweat going, stretching, two warm-up swims.
Swim
  • 22m 2s
  • 805 meters
  • 02m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt very slow. Went very wide on all buoys.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get faster arm turn-over. Train more. Aim straight for buoy to avoid swimming extra distance.
Transition 1
  • 05m 17s
Comments:

Ran into transition managed a difficult gear swap in the rain fairly well. 177 overall -- too slow.
What would you do differently?:

Dropped chain coming out of transition. Should have ridden bike before I racked it to make sure chain and wheels were all set.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 22s
  • 19.5 miles
  • 16.17 mile/hr
Comments:

A good course. Only passed by two guys. Went back and forth with a few people at start, but once I found my legs I passed them. Climbing went well, not really any flats for rolling.

Wore calf compression sleeves under wetsuit and it paid off on the bike. Not a twinge from the calves on bike or in run. Despite problems on bike actually finished ahead of more than half the field.
What would you do differently?:

Ride bike before racking to make sure wheels and chain are secure. Secure Garmin better on bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Almost wrecked coming in to T2 because guides were being lackadaisical. Almost missed turn and had to hit brakes at 20 mph. Wet carbon wheels locked up and avoided a nasty spill only because I managed to unclip both feet and get them on the ground when bike tried to go over sideways.

Got out of bike gear and into shoes quickly and without sitting down. Ran out of T2.

Rank 167 out of field -- still way TOO SLOW
What would you do differently?:

Try to figure out ahead of time how to enter transition so I don't have to rely on folks giving guidance.
Run
  • 25m 45s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Finally got loose on the one big climb after being passed by two people. Used the woman to pace myself and after cresting hill was able to push HR into 160s and keep that pace through the end of the race (1.5 miles).

Managed 8:18 miles despite everything. Last two miles were significantly faster than the first.
What would you do differently?:

Train more and work on transition from bike to run. Second time my legs have been very tight and heavy coming off the bike. I have the conditioning to run close to 7 min miles, but can't get leg turnover at start of run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking and stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs felt heavy and sore after swim. I may have over-trained.

Event comments:

Overall very good race marred only by lackadaisical volunteer staff at several places. Many did not appear to understand that their guidance -- voice, gestures, etc. -- is crucial to tired athletes who are focusing on going as fast as possible.

Course: Course was hilly and quite a bit of traffic at spots. Frequently had to slow down. Once I found my legs I was able to spin through several climbs that many struggled on. Was able to push through to the end and felt pretty good about performance. Raining at start of bike leg. Lost chain coming out of transition. Lost Garmin 305 during ride. Bad guidance coming back into transition almost resulted in bad fall. Hips very tight at start and couldn't find power on climbs. Loosened up after about 8 miles and really started to make time.
