Pre-race routine:

Woke up, ate half a clif bar and drank a bottle of gatorade endurance. Dirve the 40 minutes from the hotel to the race site and arrived early at about 6:15. Picked up our bags, body marked, set up in transition, bathroom, walk around and relax until the start.
Event warmup:

As always, I use the swim as the warm-up. I don't feel much need for a warm up when I'll be racing for over an hour.
Swim
  • 07m 46s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 33s / 100 yards
Comments:

Took the swim pretty easy. My wave seemed to have some pretty solid swimmers. It didn't take long to start running into people from the wave before ours.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

Long run up from the swim to the transition. My rack was pretty far away from the bike exit so I had further to go than some other who had their rack right at the bike exit/swim entrance (a bit unfair but eh). Suit zipper got stuck so had to walk for a moment to get it to work properly. Once I found my rack all went well.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the zipper works the first time.
Bike
  • 48m 10s
  • 16 miles
  • 19.93 mile/hr
Comments:

The hills got awfully crowded and there were a few slower riders blocking passing but all and all a good fun ride. Didn't catch my wife until the top of the second hill. It was very nice to start in a later wave so the bike had more people to chase than usual.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice more hills as they tore my legs apart. Probably could have used a more forgiving cassette as well but pushed real hard, passed a lot of people (got passed by a few too), and still had legs for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Took me a couple seconds to find my rack but besides that it seemed pretty swift.
What would you do differently?:

Find a better mark to find the rack quicker.
Run
  • 22m 57s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Still trying to figure out how to run faster but felt like a solid run. Way back was a slight false flat and was a little tough. Felt good and ended up being one of if not my fastest 5k ever so can't be dissapointed. I was happy my legs weren't burnt from the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster...if I could.
Post race
Warm down:

Grab a water and wait at the finish for the wifey.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of course knowledge, limited strength on the hills, transitions, no run speed, etc, but was very happy with my results. Always room for improvements though.

Event comments:

Very well run race and for a great cause. Would love to have another crack at the bike next year. Very fast field too. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a quality race.
