Swim
Comments: Pleasantly surprised by the swim- water was warmer than I had expected, didn't get jostled at all, sighted well and stayed on course, and (finally!) set a swim PR. Not sure if it was the full wetsuit (other Oly swims have been in a sleeveless) or the swim clinics and extra swimming I've been doing but was very happy- felt like I could have gone longer, which is good given that my next race is my first HIM. What would you do differently?: Nothing- started in exactly the right spot in the pack, drafted as much as I could, sighted efficiently, etc. Just continue to work on my technique! Transition 1
Comments: A little slow because of the full wetsuit and also trying to get my shoes out of the box I left them in to keep them dry in the rain. What would you do differently?: Finally learn to leave my shoes on the bike and get into shoes once I start riding. Bike
Comments: Definitely went about .5-1 mph slower than my normal race pace because of the rain. Just kept thinking "I'll lose more time crashing than by going a little slower on the turns." Definitely cost me though, but I wouldn't have done anything differently given the conditions. What would you do differently?: Nothing given the conditions- although I think riding more in the rain and wet conditions will go a long way in improving my confidence in those conditions come race day. Transition 2
Comments: This was pretty slow. Took some time to get my running shoes and socks on with wet feet. What would you do differently?: Learn the flying dismount after taking feet out of shoes. Run
Comments: I'm a runner, so once I got on the run I breathed a sigh of relief...until I saw those HILLS in the neighborhood! I had done the Iron Girl course before but never saw the course outside of the park and WOW- crazy hills! But I had a strong run and felt like I had a lot in the gas tank- probably because I took it easier than normal on the bike- and passed a lot of people on the run. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Wet roads- would love to do this course on a picture perfect day, although I hear from others that never happens at Columbia :) Event comments: This is an amazingly well-organized race with wonderful crowd and volunteer support. If it weren't for the history of terrible weather (and typically colder water temps) I would definitely be signing up to do it every year. Last updated: 2010-05-25 12:00 AM

Didn't sleep at all the night before worrying about the rain (haven't ridden much on wet roads or in rain- which I plan to remedy so I don't freak out as much!) and also because our three young kids woke up from the rain and thunder. Good thing I got a good night sleep Friday night. Finally got out of bed at 4 a.m. and headed out for the park (40 minutes from home) by 4:45. Got a good spot in the grass, watched cars spin out their wheels trying to get up the hill to additional parking in the rain and mud, and waited for the rain to let up a bit before heading out to get body marked and set up transition. Rain got lighter, but didn't stop, until right before race start. Found out that race was delayed by 15 minutes, which meant I wouldn't go off until 8:20 or so.
None- when rain stopped stood around the lake watching the earlier waves start and then headed to boat ramp to enter the water.
