Pre-race routine:

Hello again! Another race for me this weekend. Work and a heavy training week have been kicking my butt lately, so I was kind of happy just to get away. Made the drive from Waterloo Saturday afternoon and went straight to packet pickup. There was a line about 40 people deep, which was kind of surprising. Most races I've done, even bigger ones, have been less than 5 min. waits, this took about 30 min. Not a huge deal, but I think this would go so much faster in a larger space with maybe a few more volunteers if at all possible. Went to the hotel next, got my room, open the door to the overwhelming odor of cigarette smoke. Yuck! The hotel parking looked pretty full, so I didn't like my chances of getting the non-smoking room I booked, but I went down to the front desk anyway. No dice on the non-smoking room, but they did knock a few bucks off the rate at least, oh well. Grabbed some dinner and picked up some Powerade just to avoid sitting in the room as long as possible, but headed back around 8. By 9:30 my eyes and throat were burning and I was getting a headache. Smoke does not agree with me. I eventually got to sleep sometime after midnight, then up at 5:30, quick shower, grabbed a bagel w/ peanut butter and off to the race site. Set up transition and stood around for a good long while waiting for the start.
Event warmup:

Hopped in the water for maybe 200 yards of warmup.
Swim
  • 25m 11s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 41s / 100 meters
Comments:

The lake was pretty small, so this swim was a 2 looper right around the edge. I started to the outside as usual to avoid getting pummeled. I had a pretty good start and got out in front of the fray. Cut over and got tight on the buoy line and stayed there to the first turn, made the first turn and had to start working through traffic from the previous wave. Pretty much just cruised the rest of the first lap. Hit the exit point for the beach run back to the start for the second lap, and stumbled a little on some pretty sharp rocks. Finally got out and ran a little too fast back to the start. I had to swim pretty slow for 100 yds. or so to get my heartrate back down. After that I was fine, and just cruised the second lap. I could and probably should have pushed harder, I had a lot left in the tank at the end of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster...
Transition 1
  • 02m 54s
Comments:

Large transition area with the sprint and oly race here, but not sure why this was so slow. They made us wear the race number on the bike for some reason, so that slowed me down fumbling with that. Still pretty poor T1 time...
What would you do differently?:

Not sure...
Bike
  • 1h 06m 19s
  • 24.9 miles
  • 22.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty fun bike course, with some nice sized hills and long fast descents. I think the tubular on my disk wheel has a slow leak, it definitely felt a little low on air toward the end and handling was a little sketchy. That might have cost me a little time. I hammered this pretty hard but felt pretty good at the end, glad to see the bike is finally getting a little stronger. Could maybe have hit the last couple miles harder, but there was a lot of traffic out there with some of the slower sprint riders finishing up as well.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure rear tire is not leaking air.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

Flying dismount was a little sketchy, almost took out a volunteer, oops, sorry! Nothing to see here otherwise, got in and got out pretty quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Be more under control during bike dismount.
Run
  • 42m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Hammered it right out of transition, my goal was to break 40 min. for the run. About a mile in it was clear that wasn't meant to be today. I had a hard 16 miler Thursday night and I don't think I was fully recovered from that. So I settled in at about a 6:40 pace and just cruised. Sprinted last quarter mile or so. Not a bad effort.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing given the training demands for my ironman.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water, had a pretty decent catered lunch from Hyvee, packed up the transition area, and waited for awards to start. A little quibble here, the awards ceremony took a LONG time. That's not really desirable for people that traveled from out of town. They gave away a lot of door prizes before awards, which I think is great, but maybe do the awards first so people that need to hit the road can do so...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hard week of training and lots of hours at work, genetics...

Event comments:

Thanks to the many volunteers that allow us to go out and play! I had fun as always!
