Pre-race routine:

Max came down early in the afternoon and we headed over to the race site to get our race pacets. Turned out we were too early and had to come back. Donna still hadn't made it down so 45 minutes later we went back to the beach. It was pouring now, a sure sign for race day.

Glen joined us for dinner and Mr. TriMom217 cooked an amazing dinner for us all to enjoy.
Event warmup:

None. It was too damn cold to warm up. The swim was shortened to a 1/8 mile instead of a 1/4 mile. This turned out to be the perfect adjustment to make. We arrived at the beach about 5:15 and it was not chilly or windy. As daylight broke, we could see a few breaks in the clouds. It was hard not to get my hopes up for a dry race. It didn't take long to see the storm clouds rolling in from the south west. Once that happened the wind picked up and soon there were whitecaps on the water. All of a sudden I was very happy to be swimming a 220 instead of a 440.

Found Max, Patty, and eventually Glen. Made a new friend on my rack, Neil, a tri virgin. His energy was palpable. We hung around and chatted. Max was smart and wore jeans, fleece, and Gore-Tex. Smart guy.

HUGE freakin waves. They were rolling straight in as we headed to the first bouy and it was hard to sight because they were so big. I went a bit off course as I approached the first boy, but not too far to worry about. There was a lifeguard on a board near the first bouy and there were at least 4 people hanging on to it.

Once around the first bouy, I remembered the whole reason for learning bilateral breathing. The waves were killing me from the left but I was fine only breathing to the right. Breathing to the right used to be my weak side but now I'm fine with it. About this time I decided the best strategy was just to swim like a madwoman and get the hell out of the water. The water felt much colder than what they reported and my arms were numb. It was so cold that it musta numbed my brain because I completely forgot that I needed to pee!

As I approached the last bouy ready to turn right and head to the beach, I gave a final look to the left, and was face to face with Glen who was swimming on his side! I called out to him and we both turned the corner and headed in. I swear, all thoughts of form and efficiency were long gone by now. Just get the hell out of the water!

Up on the beach I look next to me and there's Glen :) We high five and head up the chute, only to be yelled at someone who thought we were moving to slow LOL I'm sure we were, we were walking and chatting.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Later I overheard some people say that they decided not to do the race once they saw the size of the waves. I'm glad I like the water!

Took my time again. It's raining, I'm not here to win the race, I'd rather not leave without something I'm gonna need.

Transition times are included in the bike split, so I used the time from my bike computer for the bike leg and split the difference for each transition. Close enuff for me.

same as T1. Take my time and get it done right. I ride without socks so I need to put them on in T2. I've found it's much easier to do in T2 than T1. Works for me anyhow.

love this course. I don't know why, I just do. And running it in the rain is 100 times better than running it on a hot and humid day. I've done this course and have been completely sunburned before. No chance of that today!

Saw Sue O. from work as I headed out on the run so my goal because to look good if I saw anyone else! I think my times were pretty comparable to what I've done in past years, only a bit slower.
Post race
Warm down:

no need to warm down. I was cold all day. We stayed for an accelerated version of the awards ceremony but should have left. I changed out of wet race clothes but was freezing anyhow.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

uuuuhhhhhh.....I'm just not fast. I'm ok with that. I have one speed, regardless of the distance of the race.

Event comments:

Matt came and volunteered, even after working until 11:30 last night. Hehe, I really didn't give him a choice, but he came along willingly. Max left before the awards were over. He's got a bit of a drive to get home to his lovely bride. Patty stayed with Donna and me in the hopes of us placing in the Athena division. It didn't happen and we left cold and wet but overall pleased with the morning.
