Swim
What would you do differently?: Now I need to work out sighting and better breathing to improve my time. OPverall it was my best "feeling" swim. Transition 1
Comments: The run from the swim to T1 was crazy. Over rocky pavement (bare foot!) up a wet slippery hill, then into tranition which was hot pavement. Not ideal. I would have expected that my time would have been better since it was no wetsuit but there was a long run-out with the bike. For some reason I picked up my race belt and stared at it for like 5 seconds before realizing that I didn't need it for the bike. What would you do differently?: Good transition. Bike
Comments: My chain fell off my cranks (I think I was in too high a gear on my small ring to make a smooth shift to the big ring) which cost me a stop, 15 seconds and greasy fingers the rest of the race. First time I tried Gu (the 2x caffeine version). Seemed to help. May have contributed to a complete bonk on the run. Drank two full bottles of Nuun on the downhills so should have been good hydration for the run. What would you do differently?: Figure out why my chain jumped, maybe get it checked out. It's a big advantage to have actually ridden the course before. May figure out how to train once or twice at the site Transition 2
Comments: Didn't mess up on my race number again so that's a plus. Got the hell of my sneaker folded over. Need to adjust the zip laces. Run
Comments: I should actually put these comments in the "Walk Comments" section. I probably ran less than half the distance. It was simply too hot, too hilly, too sunny, too everything. As close to a complete shut down on the course as I've had. What would you do differently?: I guess to leave some in the tank for the hot run I should have dialled back the ride a bit but my idea for this race was to be more aggressive on the bike (jumped chain put a damper on that). Post race
Event comments: The CGI team did a great job. There was lots of water and a pretty big festival after the race. It's a well coordinated, well run event, no doubt. I heard that they had issues with traffic getting into the park in prior years which leads to a later start time. This year that really hurt. I went off at 8:45, so I was running in the heat of the day, which definitely impacted my run time. The transition being in a parking lot is tough on the feet, and the long runs in and out made me feel like I got time added to my racing times that should have been logged in transition. I'm not sure I'll do this race next year because the time of year (it's probably always going to be hot at the end of July) the start time and the transition logistics. It was our first "away" race sleeping in a hotel, etc. It was a little off-putting because we couldn't eat what we normally eat. Had to search for a bagel place, all that. also, we didn't really get settled in the hotel until too late to get our 8 hours of sleep.
Really cool that they had a dedicated swim area in advance of the race. It gave you the chance to get used to the water, get aerobic and have a strong swim start.
