Swim
Comments: The swim went surprisingly well. I was expecting to come in around 30 minutes so when I looked down at my watch when I got out of the water I had a feeling it could be a real good day. I didn't feel dead and I was able to run up into transition instead of hobble and try and regain my land legs. All the time in the pool seems to be paying off. What would you do differently?: Swim some more in open water and work on sighting a bit more. Transition 1
Comments: This Olympic always has a large transition area so lots of time is lost running up to it from the water and then making your way all the way down it. So overall I'm happy with how the transition went and I didn't forget anything. What would you do differently?: Move quicker? Bike
Comments: I felt amazing on the bike. Honestly I could have pushed a bit harder and averaged 22 for the ride and I don't think it would have affected my run time in the least bit. I was taking it real easy on the uphills just spinning and then hammering it on the flats and downhills. It started raining pretty hard into the second lap which was uncomfortable when I got up to a good speed (stinging rain) but the cooling effect was very much welcome. What would you do differently?: Push a little bit harder. Transition 2
Comments: Still same big transition area and no mishaps. What would you do differently?: Move faster? Run
Comments: My legs felt great for this, but I definitely overheated and I know I wasn't the only one. Going into the second loop it was hard to breath due to the humidity and I started getting goosebumps on my skin so I pulled off real big to keep from ending up with an IV in me at the end of the race. The rain was nice on the bike but it made the run conditions miserable when it stopped. I did the first two miles at a 7:15 pace which was probably a bit too quick, but I think in a cooler less humid more ideal setting I should easily have been able to maintain sub 8:00 for the whole run. However I can't complain too much since I bested my last oly run time by 10+ minutes. What would you do differently?: Do races hen it's cooler outside haha. Post race
Warm down: Headed to the med tent and took three ice packs and downed two full bottles of ice water to cool the core temp down. Got a massage then ate some food and cheered some friends on. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat and humidity in the run. I'm 100% convinced I could have made it into the 2:2x:xx range if the conditions had been better, but I'm not going to complain considering this race was an Oly PR for me by ~20 minutes. I have a feeling the gains won't come as large in the future. Event comments: Love this race, and I'll do it again next year if I get the chance, I just wish the weather would be more cooperative. I'm pretty fortunate in that my wave started right after the open with the pros in it, the rest of the field probably suffered much more than I did when they hit the run course. Woke up a little after five and had a granola bar and downed a full 20oz bottle of water as I walked to the transition area. Wasn't too far maybe about 15 minutes from my place.
Didn't do any warmup for this race other than spinning my arms a few times in the wetsuit before getting in the water.
