Run
Comments: My goal for the first 5k was to stay controlled and go out easy. I have a bad habit of going out way to fast and end up paying for it later. I lined up close to the back and near to one of the sides to give me plenty of room. Typical brief(I assume) of reminders that there was no drafting allowed and no headphones/mp3 players on course. National Anthem was sung, horn sounded and we were off. The run course was effectively flat(150ft of elevation gain, and most of that in the first mile) and I kept to my goal. Got passed by a lot of people during the run, but I wasn't going to let it get to me. Even going easy I still managed to post my best 5k time of the year. Mile splits were 7:35, 8:10, 8:09 What would you do differently?: Not much, went pretty well. Transition 1
Comments: Ran right into T1 and quickly found my bike(easy when over half the bikes are already gone). Visor off, helmet on, running shoes off, cycling shoes on, GUs into back pocket and I'm off running with my bike out of T1. Only problem was a slight issue with the knot on my right shoe which lost me about 15 seconds fixing. What would you do differently?: I would love to learn to flying mount, but went well for a standing start. Bike
Comments: Four 5 mile loops. Was mostly rolling with one steep but very short hill about half a mile from the end of the loop. First loop was a bit crazy with everyone trying to settle into their pace. I ended up playing leap frog with a couple of people for about the first 2 loops until our pace evened out. Took a GU in another GU at the start of the second loop. Once again not sure if I needed it, but really didn't have a reason not to. Had the leaders blow by me during the second/third loops. I really felt like I was standing still a couple of times out there with them averaging 5 mph faster than me. Felt a cramp coming on in my left calf half way through the final loop but it never came and went away after about half a mile. Took in another GU about a mile out from T2, once again just in case. Overall went very well. Kept my cadence nice and high(93rpm avg) and mostly maintained my speed. Loop Averages(mph): 18.5 17.1 16.9 16.7 What would you do differently?: Take it easier at the start, went out a little faster than I intended and I think it hurt my times later. Transition 2
Comments: Was a little over excited at the dismount and started coming off my bike before I was completely stopped. I don't quite have enough skill for that yet, but luckily didn't fall. Started to run into T2 but decided it would be a better idea to walk to my spot. Got my bike racked, switched back to running shoes and visor and was off. What would you do differently?: Just had the slight issues with the dismount, but other than that went really well. Run
Comments: As I started running legs felt like jelly. Every time I do a brick I'm always surprised how slow it feels like I'm running. Did the first mile in 8:49 but it felt closer to a 10min/mile. What seemed like a mostly flat course the first time definitely felt much more hilly the second time around. Felt my HR spike around the 1.4 mile point and decided I needed to walk for a min to get it back under control. Continued to run/walk for until the 2.25 mile point where the course started going back down hill and then ran the rest of the way. I'm not sure what went wrong, I think it’s just conditioning and will just come to me the more I train. Did manage to pass a couple of people on the run and somewhere found a nice kick in my legs coming across the finish line. Mile splits were 8:49, 9:40, 9:17 What would you do differently?: Just need to do more bricks and get used to running off the bike. Post race
Warm down: Ate the free food, and talked with some of the local racers I know. Did some light stretching then headed home. Event comments: Great event, with great people. Last updated: 2010-05-30 12:00 AM

Signed up for this race kind of randomly. I saw a flyer for it at the local YMCA about a month ago and decided that a duathlon would make a great brick workout.
Went out downtown with friends Friday night and had too good of a time so was feeling kind of miserable Saturday. I had intended on doing a short swim workout to keep things loose but just wasn't up for it. My pre-race meal consisted of some grilled chicken and beer. Managed to get to bed around 11 but I was feeling some nerves so took me awhile to fall asleep.
Woke up to my alarm at 6 and had my typical breakfast of champions(Honey Nut Cheerios w/ skim milk and a glass of OJ). Had everything packed the night before so just did a quick check of my gear then headed out. Decided to drink a bottom of gateraid and eat half a cliff bar on the drive to the start. I'm really new to this so I'm still experimenting with fueling.
Got to the site(Skidmore College campus) an hour before the start. Set up my transition area, picked up my timing chip and did a final check of everything. I was feeling really nervous about this time, decided to do my warmup run/stretch a little early and it help calm my nerves immensely. Decided to have a GU 15 min before the start just in case.
