Swim
Comments: An absolutely horrible swim. I thought I was totally ready, and distance-wise I was fine throughout. I just could not get into any kind of rhythm, and think it might be partly due to the thin air and the fact that my long john wetsuit is a bit tight in the chest. Never panicked, but even on the first leg I knew I was having problems. Swam about 25-50 meters then breast stroke for about 15 seconds, then back to my 25-50 meter swim. What would you do differently?: Go for a few practice swims in high altitude. I did that for the run and bike and was ok on each of those events. Perhaps go ahead and wear my full wetsuit and give in on the shoulder freedom for a bit less restriction in the chest (that or buy another long john - a larger one). Transition 1
Comments: I am not a fast transition athlete. I move comfortably, and will only push when my actual event times start to get better. Transition was easy, as I was one of the last out of the water, so all the bikes around me were gone. What would you do differently?: Nothing really - perhaps try running from the water to my bike, maybe trying to run to bike out and keep my shoes clipped in the pedals and try putting them on while riding (but it is not that important to me right now). Bike
Comments: I was very pleased with my bike performance. I was one of the last to get on the course, then started passing other Oly athletes throughout. Even passed some people on the big hill. I did not count, but think I passed about 20 people along the way. On the downhill I got up to 43.5mph, and maintained 40mph for a good clip, which helped my time. My cadence and power were good and I was happy with the whole ride. What would you do differently?: Nothing I can think of. I would like a better time, but have no idea how to get there (other than practice, practice, practice). Transition 2
Comments: Most of the bikes on my rack were in place when I got in, so I had to make some room to get my on the rack. Overall transition was good (I plan for 5 minutes, so I beat that), got out on my run pretty easily. What would you do differently?: Have a better swim so I come into bike transition earlier and do not have to fight for rack space. Run
Comments: I was pleased with my run, but thought my time was going to be better. I felt strong, never walked, and took the hill in good form. Passed a number of people, was passed by runners I think were all Half IM athletes. What would you do differently?: Run faster, I suppose. Was hoping for 9 min miles on average, so I guess just more work and pushing harder - I had plenty of energy in the tank after the race. Post race
Warm down: Walked around, had some G2, stretched a bit and loaded up the SUV. What limited your ability to perform faster: The swim - the swim - the swim. Event comments: Maybe I missed it, but I did not see any Gatorade, water or anything else being handed out at the end of the race. No bother, I had my own. Last updated: 2010-05-31 12:00 AM

Woke up at 3:00, gathered the family, loaded my bike and gear, and headed off to Lake Mary. Figured with the number of participants that parking and transition setup would be crazy - we were one of the first to arrive so we had prime parking and transition rack space. Had a 5 hour energy, Clif Bar and banana about 5:30 (wave start at 6:47), met a couple people I know (I still need to meet more triathletes), got marked and watched the Half IM start.
Got in the water about 10 minutes early for my routine bubble blowing and warm up swim. Water was fine (about 70) temp-wise. Gave a wave to my wife and kids on the shore and moved over to my desired starting position (along the dock towards the back of the pack).
