Swim
Comments: The course was very well marked. Big red triangular bouys every 500 m with orange basketball buyos in between. The sun was high enough in the sky by the race start that it was easy to see. The altitude did affect my wind on the swim. I usually breathe every third stroke comfortably, but today had to occasionally switch to every two strokes. My Olympic swim time was still 20 minutes faster than it was a year ago, so I was happy. What would you do differently?: The race began with one big wave start for all of the men (including relays) so I would have darted out in front at the gun, rather than swimming over and around people during the first 200 m. Transition 1
Comments: Steep, semi-long uphill out of the water and into T1. Got in and out or transition without a hitch. What would you do differently?: Nothing Bike
Comments: Beautiful and fun bike course. I went at it a little too hard, but it felt good to know that I gave it my all! What would you do differently?: Take in more fluids early on in the ride. Transition 2
Comments: Smooth T2. Had no trouble racking my bike, grabbing my race belt and two Powergels, and heading out. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Brutal run. I swore I was shuffling along at 9:30 miles, but wound up putting together a semi-decent run. The combination of being tired from a strong effort on the bike, the altitude, and the heat never really allowed me to get my running legs going until the last mile. I was panting the entire run...I usually run pretty comfortably, but today this was not the case. I wanted so badly to give up and walk, but I kept plugging away :) What would you do differently?: Take more water and bring a sun visor. Post race
Warm down: Ate a heavenly grape popcicle at the finish line. Jumped into the lake to cool off. Had a free, mediocre Mexican snack/lunch at the event. Talked and laughed with some good people. Dan and I had to ride back the the hotel (uphill and in 96 degree heat)...that was not so fun. Since we couldn't get a late checkout, we hoofed it back to Tempe sunburned, hot, and tired. The whole day was still an overall blast! What limited your ability to perform faster: The altitude and the heat. Event comments: Tri Sports did a great job! Lots of support, beautiful course, and not too many athletes. The caliber of athlete at this race was amazing. Not many newbies here for sure. Last updated: 2010-05-31 12:00 AM

Woke up at 2:55 am and could not fall back asleep. My friend Dan ate an egg and sausage sandwich that was included with our hotel stay, but I am always too nervous to eat anything before a race. I showered, shaved, brushed my teeth, packed the car, and was out the door towards the race by 5:45.
Rode the bike with all of my gear for the race about 4.5 miles from the hotel to the transition area. Watched the 1/2 Ironman racers begin while waiting for the Olympic to begin.
