Swim
Comments: Anyone who reads this should learn from my dumb mistake. I missed my wave start. Anyone who was there to watch will remember the knucklehead who jumped in after everyone had left. I was helping a woman zip up her wet suit (she did not know it was still open). As I was doing this, a nice gentleman said to me "dude, your wave just left!" I did not realize our wave was first. I had looked at the women's wave for my age and thought we were in the middle. I lost about a minute and had to fight through a crowd of people. I ended up going way inside looking for clean water. I knew I could break 12 mins, but not when I started that far back. I ended up passing 50 people (punching a few to, sorry). Horrible swim. Breathing was off, stroke was off and I was angry at my stupidity. What would you do differently?: Let me see......how about I take all my months of work, my 5 am wake up to swim before work, my eating right, my lost family time and not throw it in the garbage by missing a start! Transition 1
Comments: Fastest T1 in age group and about as fast as most overall winners. My goal for this C race was to incorporate a few new tricks and they worked. I tried to eliminate socks, but could never get feet in shoes, so this time included socks on. I attached sunglasses to bike with rubber bands and put them on while I was rolling after shoes were locked in. What would you do differently?: Work on putting helmet on while I step out of wet suit. Bike
Comments: I felt good and fast. The bad swim situation had frustrated me, but I got over it quick. Got up to speed quick and kept a good pace. Second lap felt much better than first. My cycling computer was not working which made things tough for me. I like to see my speed. Cadence still worked which helped. What would you do differently?: Make sure magnet for speed sensor was tight and not able to move if bike is bumped or bounced during mounting. Transition 2
Comments: Fastest time in age group and almost as fast as fastest time in entire race (one guy did it in 25 seconds WTF?). Talc in shooes helped. I had to replace bike on rack after first attempt failed (1-2 seconds). What would you do differently?: see about racking bike with front first, not sure if my bike will do it, and I don't want it to fall on someones transition stuff. Run
Comments: Same story as my first triathlon. I can swim, I can bike, but I cannot compete with this run pace. I could tell from the start that my run was slow and I got passed by many people. I felt better after the first mile, but knew my pace was slow. I had a cramp in my side (which I never get) and kept running though it. Need to do more work on run training. What would you do differently?: Not much. I think i should have pushed harder on the first mile. I fell into a comfortable pace and never left it. Post race
Warm down: Not much. Drank water and tried not to die. It was very hot for 8am. Showed kids my participation medal and told them that only the best racers get them. What limited your ability to perform faster: Simple. Lack of prep and knowledge about the start time. I did not taper down for this one and my legs felt it. I stayed up too late the night before and had a few drinks at dinner party (probably not good). Event comments: There was a few traffic issues with cars pulling out. The course pavement was in poor shape for a bike race. The course if technical for a 2 loop race with 600 people in it. The location is very nice. Beach, bathrooms, lots of parking. I will be back next year and I may get there 2 hours early to avoid the same mistakes. Last updated: 2010-05-31 12:00 AM

Ate oatmeal and a little fruit. Drank carb drink and coffee. Spent a good 20 mins last night checking bike. When loading bike in am, noticed front tire was flat (bad omen). Arrived a little late and did not get a good warm up. Did not pay attention to the start time for my wave (big mistake). Assumed it was in the middle.
Spent most time jogging back and forth from car to transition area and chip pickup. Not organized and family was a little distracting. I did swim a good 300 to 400 meters to the start line, which was great.
