Pre-race routine:

The day before I finally was able to give my wonderful wife a proper wedding on our four year anniversary. She and I were very tired from a busy week of preparation for the event and didn't arrive at the hotel until midnight. Woke up at 6, then we drove to the site. I went to packet pick up and then dropped my gear at transition. Met up with my best friends, one who was running (Jeremy) and one who was relegated to head cheerleader (Matt) due to injury. Absolutely awesome to do a race with those guys! Found a port-a-pot as all the food from yesterday's party was ready to leave...
Event warmup:

Ran about for about four minutes with Jer. Prolly shoulda done more....

Comments:

Had trouble getting any speed going but that's not surprising. In my preparation for Ironman Lake Placid I have focused on distance over speed and this was the shortest run distance I have done in 3 months.
What would you do differently?:

Lil more warmup. Drink more H2O.

Comments:

Didn't have much of a plan and it showed. But that's why I did this event!
What would you do differently?:

Shoes on the bike, move with purpose. Forgot nutrition in transition.

Comments:

I learned alot just during the course of the race. My first lap was slow and as I got more comfortable I started to move right along. Unfortunatley my ride needs a tune that I didn't have time for so the small ring was skipping alot. I stuck almost exclusively to the big ring and did much better at shifting on the subsequent laps, allowing me to maintain more momentum. I hit a pothole while shifting at the beginning of lap 3, losing my chain. It took me a second to fix it and it was tough to get mhy legs going again. My last lap was by far the fastest, and with my lowest heart rate.... If I ever figure this cycling thing out, this will be alot of fun!
What would you do differently?:

Pound it! I had alot left in the tank.
Get the bike serviced before the event.

Comments:

I saw my buddy Jer as I was starting the run (he was finishing and winning the age group!) which was AWESOME! Felt like I couldn't get my legs going, but that's no surprise.
What would you do differently?:

Charge my watch!

Warm down:

Walked around

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training for looooong events, inexperience on the bike, genetics.

Event comments:

Good day and I learned alot, which was the goal!

Mile Splits were 6:42, 6:45, 6:41 HR ranged from 162-174
Course: Lots of hills but all moderate. Course starts out with a gradual descent for about 1/4 mile and then starts a mile long climb. It is not steep, just long. The good news is that following some rolling hills for the middle mile the last mile is down that hill again. A short uphill to the transition area with a HUGE American Flag waving in the breeze to mark it. Great motivation for memorial day!

Laps were relatively even. First lap was slowest as it always takes me a while to hit my groove. HR started at 166 (first lap) and then was down to 145 (last lap)
Wind: Some
Course: This was my first time racing on a bike...ever. Just over 5 miles a loop, which I actually kinda' liked as I could learn the course as I went. A couple of curves in the first mile and then a straight segment in the second mile. This straight portion was the worst part of the course as it was into the wind (which wasn't bad) and on a really broken, uneven road (which was really bad). A 90 turn into a 3/4 mile stretch of uphill. This is not real steep, just continuous. I took it easy on the first ascent, not knowing what was next. Another 90 degree turn onto the next section led to a slight decline with some rollers. This is a really fast section of the course and was alot of fun. At just over 4 miles a third 90 degree turn with an immediate ascent. It was pretty easy to maintain speed and then continue momentum. About a 1/2 mile from the end of the first loop is the only 'steep' climb on the course, and it is short and not really that steep. It is a decline to the end of the loop and it can be pretty fast down to another 90 degree turn to start the next lap. At least one cyclist took it too fast and dumped. Ouch!
