Swim
Comments: Hot nasty water. Wanted to get out fast to avoid getting hit in the face. Crashed on the bike a few weeks earlier and had braces on my teeth. Struggled to keep my tempo. Didn't know the course went under the bridge. Different from last year? Was difficult to navigate going into the sun as well. Added 20 seconds to my time from last year after stopping three times to look around. Frustrated because I am a much better swimmer than this. What would you do differently?: Know the course ahead of time. Try to catch a better draft. Transition 1
Comments: Wanted to go sub-60 sec. on T1 but I took a little longer. Enjoyed the run up the grass hill, but took a little extra time getting my race belt on. I don't usually put it on till T2 but I thought the RD said we had to have it. Oh well. T2 was faster as a result. Bike
Comments: Felt ok going out. Got passed on the first hill then passed back. Was caught by a second guy and went back and forth with him. Had trouble with shifting. Thought my bike was tuned up the day before, but didn't have much time to check it. Was worn out by the turn around and was passed. Spent the rest of the time trying to close the gap. A group of three guys including Terranova caught me at the end and I stayed with them down the hill. Wanted to break and hour and average over 23 mph but it didn't happen. No crashes this time. What would you do differently?: Taper more on the bike coming into the race. Don't think I took it easy enough after my training crash. Was too concerned about days I missed that I didn't rest enough coming into this race. Doubt this was an "A" race for other people either. Transition 2
Comments: Thought I would have the best T2 of all but only ranked 13th. Still happy with it. Run
Comments: Was really looking forward to getting off the bike and putting my new "run" to the test. After two miles I had to back off my sub-6:30 pace and suffered a lot through the remainder. The sun was brutal and I had a hard time keeping cool, grabbing two waters at every station to throw on myself. Still took a couple minutes off my run time from last year, but wanted to be sub 29 mins. What would you do differently?: Once again I thought I my overtraining in the days leading up to the race were my ultimate downfall. Really thought I could place in the top ten, but am content with how it turned out. Post race
Warm down: mile or so cool down with Jessica. Cool down and shower at the hotel, only to come back to awards to learn I had placed 4th in my AG and not 3rd. Damn. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overtraining after my bike crash to make up for days off. Event comments: I will race next year and bring home some hardware of some sort. Happy with being top 15, but I know I am a better triathlete than what I showed at the race. Last updated: 2010-06-01 12:00 AM
