Run
Comments: I am actually shocked at my time. At the 1-mile mark there was a clock and my time was 9:40, and I was happy with that, but a little worried that I was going too hard. My heart rate stayed in the LT zone for most of the race, but I felt good except during the last quarter mile, when I wanted to pass out on Main street. Luckily there was this nice dude running next to me and we kept each other going until I smoked him on the last straightaway. I told him that we had to beat the guy pushing the double baby-jogger in front of us (we did pass him, thankfully). I am THRILLED with how I did today. My goal was a sub 30, and I nailed that easily. There were no timing mats at the beginning, so I actually ran faster than what my official time says! This was my first road race ever and I am psyched with how I did. I can't wait to do it again :) What would you do differently?: Drink a little more before the race. I am prone to side stitches if I drink too much before I run, but I think I could have benefited from more. Post race
Warm down: Put my wind breaker back on, drank some water, said goodbye to Danielle, and headed for the car. There was food at the finish but I felt a little ill and the thought of eating didn't appeal to me. What limited your ability to perform faster: Nothing Event comments: I thought this was a good race (although I don't have any to compare it to) and I would do it again next year. The golden potato is a sh*tty finisher's medal, but oh well. I liked the course because I work in downtown Hartford and these are my stomping grounds. Last updated: 2006-01-17 12:00 AM

I picked up my race packet the day before at Pig Iron and then C and I met Rob (CptnJackSparrow) and his wife for carbo-loading at Bertucci's because Rob had a race today too.
I didn't sleep too well (for many reasons), but I got up around 9 and had Instant Breakfast, then C and I grabbed breakfast at 10. I puttered around the house all morning, making sure I had all of my stuff together, deciding what to wear (always important), and then we left for Hartford at 11:45. Don't ask about the drive in...
It was cold, rainy, and windy when we arrived in Hartford. We parked in the Travelers garage (available to employees on weekends) and then couldn't figure out how to get out to the street because it is gated everywhere! Finally, we figured it out and headed for the check in. I met up with Danielle (Danielle860) and we waited out the rain in McDonald's. I had a Cliff Shot 20 minutes before the race, jogged to the potro-lets, stretched, and fidgeted in line until the race started. Danielle moved up to be closer to the front while I stayed in the mid back of the pack. Luckily it stopped raining and the wind died down.
