Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

Walking to the transition area and dynamic stretching.
Swim
  • 34m 23s
  • 1094 yards
  • 03m 08s / 100 yards
Comments:

This being my second OWS race, I decided to stay well in the back. Unfortunately I was ill-prepared for all the grass/kelp/netting/God knows what coming up from the abyss at the start and towards the end of the swim. Had difficulty sighting as well and felt like my arms were going to fall off halfway through. Was extremely tempted to hang on to a kayak as I lost count of the number of yellow buoys I passed but after rounding the last buoy and seeing the transition area, I pulled through.
What would you do differently?:

Study the swim course map/don't lose count of buoys/pace myself better
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Had to lift my bike over other athletes sitting on the ground.
Bike
  • 1h 06m 23s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 15.82 mile/hr
Comments:

Overall, I was not entirely happy with my bike. Thought that my rear tire was rubbing against the frame. At first I thought the front brake pads were rubbing up against the wheel, so I loosened it while on the bike, which cost me a bit of time. Overall I thought I could've eked out another mile an hour.
What would you do differently?:

Do a better job checking tire to frame clearance.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s
Run
  • 39m 36s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 11m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

After practicing multiple times on this course, I thought I had this nailed down but the unbearable heat really affected my performance. My legs felt heavy and thought I could've shaved at least a minute/mile on my time.
What would you do differently?:

Keep a wet towel at my station to cool off.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat kills my mojo.

Event comments:

Great race - was disappointed that they banned wetsuits =(
